Location description from owner

The England region

England's largest National Park includes Scafell Pike - its highest mountain, Wastwater - its deepest lake, and thriving communities like Keswick, Cockermouth and Whitehaven.

More than 3500kms of "rights of way" over the Fells and around 12 of the largest lakes in England.

Ennerdale Bridge

".........north of Wasdale is the neighbouring valley of Ennerdale, often cited by seasoned Lakelanders as the most scenic corner of the entire National Park"

"ENNERDALE remains entirely free of the traffic jams, cruise boats and heaving crowds you'll find at many of the region's other beauty spots." - Quotations used by permission from Lonely Planet Lake District Guide.

As recently visited by Julia Bradbury & Ellie Harrison for BBC's Countryfile, Ennerdale is England's wildest valleys. It is one of the most remote lakes, offering a place to escape even in the high season. Yet it is only a 20 minute drive from a variety of towns and areas. Ennerdale lake is a deep glacial lake, 2.5 miles long, ¾ mile wide and 148 feet deep. The water is exceptionally clear and contains a variety of fish. It is the only lake that does not have a road running alongside it.

It was the first attempt in England to turn a large landscape back into a wilderness. Follow Wild Ennerdale's progress on BBC's "Costing the Earth" - available on iplayer.

Around Ennerdale, there are plenty of activities to keep you occupied.

Hundreds of walks - from gentle lakeside strolls to energetic mountain hikes

Rock climbing

Mountain biking in Ennerdale Forest

Fishing in the lake (permit required)

Pony trekking

Go-Karting

The nearest village, Ennerdale Bridge, has a church and two public houses (both serving good food and a variety of beers, including real ale).

“A fabulous Holiday”

Reviewed 29 Mar 2016

from the time of arrival, we were visited by the owner, who could not have been more welcoming, we had everything we needed, and appreciated the wonderful views, the comfortable farmhouse and barn, which accommodated our party of 15 with room to spare.

“Huge House, Great Location”

Reviewed 22 Feb 2016

This house is HUGE! It is also very clean, and everything you need is provided. The bedrooms are all great and the beds comfy. The open fires provide a nice backdrop in the evening after a days walking with the dogs. All in all a great base for a large party to explore the Western Lakes. Also, great little pub in the village - Fox and Hounds (Dog Friendly).

“A fabulous, comfortable property in a stunning setting”

Reviewed 5 Jan 2016

Far Moor End is an amazing property. We had a group of 16 people staying there comfortably, with ample space for dining, relaxing, cooking meals and storing outdoor gear - as well as washing and drying, and more than ample heating from the eco-friendly energy plant. Step out the door and you've got walks, cycling, pubs and even the seaside within easy reach. Jan looks after you during your stay with great cheer, and is very respectful of his guests' private enjoyment of their stay. Highly recommended - you'll love Far Moor End!

“Family birthday celebration”

Reviewed 18 Dec 2015

First ever review. Booked Far Moor End for long weekend family birthday celebration. Property description was accurate and the owner Jan was there on arrival providing useful info. Our group ranged in age from 14 to 85 and all were well accommodated with enough space to be together and apart ( when needed!). Catered for ourselves for two nights. The local supermarket delivery and well equipped kitchen made this a breeze. 3rd night was a short drive to local pub for a lovey meal. Weather was "typical" for Lakes in late November so decided to take advantage of the lake walk on the Saturday and a very very wet fell walk on the Sunday, both direct from the property. Saving the need to drive anywhere, bliss. The house is in a lovely spot and it was perfect for all our group.

“An outstanding Lake District property”

Reviewed 8 Nov 2015

Far Moor End was, quite simply, as close to perfection as one can get. The converted house and linked barn are surrounded by woodland, paddocks, ponds and a wildflower meadow, with the only colony of fresh water mussels in England close by in the river Ehen, a special area of conservation. The house had everything one could possibly need on holiday: masses of space, a sundeck, games room, books, a huge dining room, two well-appointed kitchens and very comfortable beds. The place was spotless on arrival, and when we met the owners Jan and Clare, we could see why. They couldn't have been more helpful and friendly, and most importantly, they had huge concern for the environment and the eco-systems they were responsible for. Our group of eleven friends had a very happy week, walking on the hills in the day (many glorious walks were accessible from the front door without the need to drive anywhere), and then strolling to one of the two excellent pubs, about 20 minutes walk away, in the evening. We saw an owl one night, among many species of local birds, and were able to explore 15 acres of woodland in perfect secluded safety. This was an unforgettable holiday and we hope to return before too long.

“Wonderful setting and a fabulous holiday let”

Reviewed 15 Sep 2015

The house was spotless and very well equipped. Ideal for a large family group - we were 10 adults and 6 children all under 7 - they simply loved it. The setting was magnificent, with unspoilt beautiful mountain ,river and lake scenery, accessed from the door

“Flawless.”

Reviewed 15 Jul 2015

Flawless in every way. Clean and tidy. Friendly and helpful contacts. Superb location, every guest commented on the house in close to amazement. Great facilities (table football, guitar and keyboard, table tennis, wonderful dining room for poker games) - completely flawless. Would highly recommend and will absolutely be returning again.

“Fantastic stay at Far Moor End”

Reviewed 22 Jun 2015

I was part of a group of 16 adults staying in the beautiful setting that is Far Moor End. The house comfortably housed all of us, providing great facilities for cooking, and also games rooms/table tennis to keep us occupied in the evenings! The bedrooms were all very clean and spacious, the owner (Jan) was incredibly helpful and the setting was unbelievable, sat in the idyllic Ennerdale Bridge with countless walks (both through the grounds) and beyond! I thoroughly recommend FME, and believe that this would be great for all party types, at any time of the year!

“Brilliant”

“A great Easter break”

Reviewed 8 Apr 2015

A great cottage ideal for a large gathering of family or friends. The cottage has every amenity you could wish for and is presented in an immaculate condition. As a large group of friends we stayed for the Easter holidays and we all loved the place. Set in a idyllic and tranquill location amongst 14 acres of land which is perfect for exploring the natural beauty the Lake District has to offer. Our hosts were very welcoming and I would definately recommend this cottage to family and friends.
