Location description from owner

The England region

Swallow Barn is close to the boundary of the Lake District National Park. This is fabulously scenic area, and worth a visit at any time of year. All land above 3000 feet in England, and the highest mountain and the deepest & longest lakes in England lie within this National Park. The area is also associated with poet William Wordsworth and children's author & illustrator, Beatrix Potter.

The western extent of the Yorkshire Dales National Park are equally accessible from Swallow Barn. This area features pretty market towns and villages and features rolling upland pastures and heather moorland with limestone crags, and contain the " Yorkshire Three Peaks" of Ingleborough (723 metres), Pen y Ghent (691 metres) and Whernside (728 metres).

To the South of Swallow Barn, and easily accessible, is the less well known Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, consisting of beautiful gritstone fells, deep valleys and peat moorland, famous for grouse shooting.

Lastly Morecambe Bay, which is just visible from Swallow Barn, is an important wildlife site, with varied marine habitats and renowned for its abundant bird life. The bay has rich cockle beds, which have been fished by locals for generations.

The whole region is thus a paradise for walkers, cyclists, water sports enthusiasts, cavers and birdwatchers.

Northern England

Swallow Barn is close to the picturesque market towns of Kendal and Kirkby Lonsdale. Windermere, at the heart of the southern lakes, is within 30 minutes by car. There are walks around the area and many places of interest such as Arnside with its tidal estuary and organised low-tide walks across Morecambe Bay sands. Leighton Moss Nature Reserve and Ingleton with its caves and waterfalls are both nearby, as are the famous "Three Peaks" of Ingleborough, Pen y Ghent and Whernside, with their associated '12 hour challenge'.

The Westmoorland Showground is approximately 3 miles away and is the location for the annual Westmoorland County Annual Show. The Lancaster Canal is close by, where barge rides can sometimes be taken. The towpath can be followed to Kendal.

“Simply Superb!”

Reviewed 1 Oct 2016

Swallow Barn was even better than we'd hoped for and had even been given a make-over in certain areas to keep things up-to-date; the situation is fine for both Lakes and Dales and anyone staying here can totally rely on the care and attention of the owner; all in all, a fantastic stay, a great holiday and even the poor weather couldn't spoil things!

“Good family base for an outdoorsy family vacation”

Reviewed 7 Aug 2016

My family and I (plus guests) stayed at Swallow Barn for 5 weeks for an extended summer vacation. The barn conversion has significant character and set in a stunning location with magnificent views from Morcambe bay to the Lake District. The accommodation is decent though slightly jaded (some new matrasses etc would be a suggestion), with a well equipped kitchen and pleasant upstairs living and dining area. The location is both a plus and a minus, being remote and therefore inaccessible without a car, and a reasonable distance from the nearest shops etc. However access to the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Motorway (M6) and mainline train (Oxenholme) is easy generating a huge range of potential activities. The barn is on an exposed scarp helping to generate the great view but meaning that the location feels the full force of any bad weather, but overall the location is a big plus.

“Excellent accommodation for large families and friends”

Reviewed 2 Nov 2014

This was our extended family's second stay at Swallow Barn and on both occasions it served as a very comfortable and well-equipped base for a brief stay in the Lake District. For 8 people of various ages, four bedrooms and three bathrooms, with plenty of living and dining space, makes for a most enjoyable holiday. Views across to Morecambe Bay and the surrounding farmland are glorious, and a welcoming pack of milk, bread and fire logs is one of the touches that makes this property special. Would highly recommend this at any time of year.
