Description from owner

Description

Primrose Hall is a homely cottage in the centre of the lovely village of Empingham, with parking immediately outside. A pub serving hot, home-cooked food is one minutes walk away and open all day. There is also a shop open 7 days a week, a doctors surgery and a hairdressers. Originally a farm building, it was converted in 1863 as a meeting place for The Primrose League, a political organisation set up in memory of Benjamin Disraeli and using his favorite flower as an emblem. In the middle of the 20th Century it lapsed into dis-repair and in 2008 the current owners completely renovated it, converting it into the wonderful holiday cottage it is today. Original features remain including an Ancaster Arms Crest embedded in the stone fireplace, a highly unusual oak block floor in the open plan living area and exposed beams are displayed in every room.

Empingham lies half way in between the historic market towns of Stamford and Oakham. The quaint alleyways and hidden corners in each of the towns are home to some exquisite independent retailers. Stamford, with its Georgian townhouses is widely regarded as one of the finest stone towns in England and is home to Burghley House, one of the most magnificent stately homes in the country.

Rutland Water is home to The British Birdwatching Fair and perfect to enjoy an active or relaxing holiday. Go sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, fly-fishing, birdwatching, rock climbing, take a cruise or just enjoy the wonderful views with a gentle stroll around its footpaths.

Three miles from Empingham is Barnsdale Gardens, a theme park for garden enthusiasts. Built by Geoff Hamilton for the BBC's Gardeners World, it contains over 30 individually themed gardens and provides courses and events throughout the year.

Rutland may be the smallest county in England, but has two Michelin starred restaurants and many with one or more AA rosettes and is home to The Good Pub Guide's "Pub of the Year". Good quality food is a passion, and the cottage contains a folder with sample menus from over 30 local eateries, as well one with information on the numerous things to do in the area designed to cater for every taste and budget. Both folders are constantly up-dated so you can easily find out "what's on" when you stay.

Getting around

Staying in a small county surrounded by five others can make it hard to discover all that is on offer in the area, as each county has it's own tourist authority. However the information supplied in Primrose Hall is informative and clear and does not just concentrate on Rutland, but shows attractions close by in Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire.

Interaction with guest

A few weeks before your stay, Dale will send you a personal email with details she feels will be useful to you...where to pick up the key, where the thermostat is, how to find the village shop, where the wifi passcode is, where a spare key is located etc. If you have dogs good walks can be suggested and advice on dog friendly pubs.. On your first evening Dale or Helen will call round to answer any queries you may have.

“Everything you could need from a perfect dog friendly cottage”

Reviewed 7 Oct 2018

Primrose Hall cottage, is a cosy comfortable home from home historic holiday accommodation. Ideal for a short or long holiday break, with everything could possibly need, to totally rest and relax. The owners have gone of their way to make sure it’s well equipped. They have thought of everything. That include Comfortable beds, good heating if needed, plenty of towels, books, games a welcoming delicious bowl of fruit, bottles of milk and wine. Our dog was spoilt too by the dog biscuits left for her. With bowls and towels for her if needed. The pretty village has a little well stocked shop and dog friendly pub all within walking distance. And others not too far away. There are plenty of lovely walks in the beautiful surrounding area. We especially fell in love with the Rutland Lakes. So much to do if you enjoy watersports, bike rides or just amazing scenery and walks around the waters. We would definitely like to stay again and have already talked our friends into making a future booking.

“The Ideal pet friendly getaway.”

A wonderful fully equipment home from home cottage in a perfect location. Primrose Hall has been restored to a very high standard with all the requirements a holiday cottage needs. With some essential provisions already supplied, for man, woman and dog, it gives an excellent welcome factor. Rutland is such a great place for all ages to explore. 2nd time we've holidayed in Rutland, not our last! Thank you Catherine and Simon for a great week.

“Perfect Pet Friendly Break”

Reviewed 24 Sep 2018

The cottage is in a beautiful location, and very dog friendly. Catherine the owner has thought of everything, we have never been to a holiday cottage where the owner has left wine, beer, fruit, chocolates and fresh flowers. And even calls round on your first evening to check everything is ok and tell you about the area. She has gone the extra mile and needs to be complemented. The cottage is well placed to visit the likes of Stamford, Oakham, and Rutland Water is within walking distance of the cottage. There are some wonderful walks from the cottage door, and so much to see and do, the 4 days we were up there just wasn't enough. I would highly recommend this cottage to other dog owners, even though the courtyard garden isn't very big don't be put off from going because there are plenty of dog walk places from the front door. There is a pub just down the road called the White Horse which is dog friendly and a small well stocked shop in the village which sells most things. This is a little gem of a cottage for dog people like us, and a added bonus, and one a lot of other cottage owners could learn from is the owner Catherine going all out to make sure people have everything within the cottage they could possibly want and for being so concerned they have a enjoyable time while staying at the cottage.

“Quaint luxury hideaway”

This place is just what we needed. Long Girlie weekend to getaway from it all, in a stay at a fabulous And extremely well equipped cottage. I would definitely recommend this place to stay. The area is just lovely too......a visit to the white horse literally yards away from the front door is a must we had a good feed from the sunday specials menu that was delicious especially after a long walk around the surrounding countryside. The owners are lovely and make sure you have everything you need. We will be back. Louise, Angela, Bec and Nicola. X

“Beautiful holiday home!”

Reviewed 29 Aug 2013

We found this accommodation only a few days before our trip and the owner couldn't have been more accommodating! Everything was arranged in a couple of emails and absolutely no fuss! It's amazing how this property has been renovated and the owners have done a fantastic job down to the tiny details! We had fresh flowers and fruit waiting for us on arrival as well as high chair and travel cot which made travelling with a baby a lot easier! The village is beautiful and really close to Rutland waters (5 min drive) where there's plenty to entertain you for the day! Would definitely go again!

We also found all the information about the surrounding area very useful.

“Perfect”

Reviewed 6 Oct 2012

From the moment I booked this property up until I left everything was perfect. I arrived to the most wonderful welcome of fresh flowers, tea, coffee, milk which I was desperate for a cuppa after a long drive. On top of that the most amazing bowl of fruit and some treats for my dog. This was so thoughtful of the owner and nothing I have ever received before. The cottage was amazing, clean, spacious and every piece of equipment needed in the kitchen and more than I had expected. Too many little touches to mention but you will not be disappointed. The beds are extremely comfy and I had some of the best nights sleep especially being away from home. I cannot fault this propery in anyway. The location was also perfect I was looking to do some biking, and walking and I was able to bike to Rutland Water from the cottage and take the dog to the enclosed part for a safe run of the lead and having a springer spaniel he needed to run free so only being 2 mins in the car it was perfect. Some beautiful walks around and the owner has a folder packed of things to do, places to eat and lots of laminated walks for you to try so if you are stuck for things to do, you will be able to find something. I can't wait to go back and was very sorry to leave. It was one of the most relaxing holidays I have had in a long time and a lot of that was the accommodation and location. Thank you for renting out your beautiful home.

“Comfortable and Cosy Cottage in a lovely location”

Reviewed 21 Sep 2012

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights on a cycling/walking visit to Rutland. The cottage was very clean and comfortable and superbly equipped with everything you could need plus nice touches such as wine, fruit, coffee tea and milk to get you started. The owner was very accommodating and helpful and was happy to squeeze us in at short notice. The cottage is located in a lovely village close by Rutland Water and was ideal for us as it was just a short hop on our bikes to view and enjoy this picturesque area. With the towns of Stamford and Oakham closeby it is in an ideal location to explore this delightful part of the country.
