Location description from owner

The Lasithi Prefecture region

There are many examples of Minoan sites to be seen on the island. Knossos is no doubt the most famous but other good examples can be found closer to Elounda at Latos and Malia. Byzantine ruins can be seen underwater just off the causeway in Elounda at the far end of the harbour. Spinalonga itself has its own fascinating history. Until 1952 it was the last leper colony in Europe and is well worth a visit as it is very atmospheric and you can still sense the spirits of those souls who spent their entire lives within the walls of the old fortress.

Maps and Guides: There is a range of maps and guides in the bookcase in the villa but this section and the next makes a few more personal recommendations. There is a range of maps and guides in the bookcase in the villa but this section and the next makes a few more personal recommendations.Eating Out:There is a relatively new Taverna opened within walking distance of the villa, just walk or drive to the T junction at the end of the access road to the villa and turn right. Very simple Greek food and wine but very reasonably priced and staggering distance back!Wide range of places to eat out in Elounda. They all serve a wide range of dishes but each has its own distinctive style and no one but you can decide what gives you a buzz as part of the eating out experience. For some reason fish can be very expensive with the odd exception for ‘Specials’ so check the prices before ordering. More traditional Greek dishes based usually on lamb are the best value. Below are a few observations about how some of the restaurants we have more regularly used performed in 2007/2008. The key features for us are friendly waiters, character (slightly eccentric is good) and at least consistent food preparation. For fish and good sea views the Ecovrite restaurant in the harbour is good although there can be a slightly distracting smell of diesel from the water as most of the little fishing boats are diesel powered.
Following the harbour with the sea on your left and the village square on your right (the cruise boats to Spinalonga are all moored here), there is a string of restaurants some on wooden pontoons which are quite romantic and make the most of cooler evening breezes. The first couple do more fish than the others but may not be as welcoming or have the most interesting atmospheres. The best of the early restaurants are Megaro and Poulis and as you reach the end of the row you will find the Ferryman run by Akis and his French wife Sophia who is charming as well as having a degree in marine biology. The food here is usually excellent and they are very flexible about anything extra or special you want (leaving out ingredients etc). The harbour square offers a very friendly breakfast venue at the Eden restaurant and the best selection of ice creams can be found at the All in One Creperie. If you turn left into the car park at the harbour and drive down past the beach on your right you will come to a very sharp left hand turning signposted Mavrikiano. This road goes steeply uphill and about 200 metres on the right you will find a tavern called The Hope. This is very local and has a limited menu but all very nicely cooked and at lower prices than the more obvious places around the harbour. Locals use this which is a form of recommendation.Something to Drink? The harbour square is ringed with bars and the local hotels welcome drop ins. Where to drink is a matter of what ambience you are looking for so cruise around until you find what you are looking for. Shops: Again part of the fun to find out what’s about but worth walking out along the main street towards Agios and looking out for a gallery called Cicada (just past the quad bike hire shop). Crazy and passionate sculptor called Alex and his wife Marialena and some really original sculpture.
