The Canary Islands region
Tenerife is the largest and most populous of the seven Canary Islands; it is also the most populated island in Spain, with a land area of 2,034.38 km² (785.47 ml²) and 898,680 inhabitants, 43% of the total population of the Canary Islands. About five million tourists visit Tenerife each year, the most visited in Canary Islands. It also provides with one of the world's largest carnivals: Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is actually attempting to become a World Heritage Site. The island is serviced by two airports, Tenerife North Airport and Tenerife South Airport, and constitutes the tourism and economic centre of the archipielago.
In Tenerife it is also located the highest point in Spain, a World Heritage Site and the third largest volcano in the world from its base, El Teide. The island's capital (Santa Cruz) contains the architectural symbol of the Canary Islands, the modern Auditorio de Tenerife.
Tenerife is known internationally as the "Island of Eternal Spring" (Isla de la Eterna Primavera). The island, being on a latitude of the Sahara Desert, enjoys a warm climate all year-round with an average of 20–22 °C in winter and 26–28 °C in summer and plenty of sunshine. Besides its latitude, the moderate climate of Tenerife is due to a great extent by the sea winds, containing humidity, that eventually are condensed over the north and northeast of the island, creating cloud banks that range between 600 and 1,800 metres in height. A wonder of nature that could be seen when you visit Teide mountain. The cold sea currents of the Canary Islands also have a cooling effect on the coasts and its beaches. This, together with the topography of the landscape plays a role in the climatic variety within the island.
La Tejita beach (1 kilometer long) is just 5 minutes walk, it is a natural and fine dark sand one, “a peaceful yet pretty beach that's impressively situated at the foot of a steep red-tinged hill“ It is separated from the beach of El Medano by the volcano Red Mountain (171 m. height) that comes right into the sea and designated by UNESCO as Protected Natural Reserve. "Great place for a relaxing get-away-from-it-all holiday"
I booked this property because i wanted a beach holiday and it was just a 5 minute walk to get there. I thought i wouldn't need to hire a car (and didn't particularly want to anyway) but i was a little disappointed there wasn't even a minimarket to buy water etc within walking distance. Perhaps i should have done more research! This wasn't a problem really though as the 470 bus went into El Medano town on the hour 1.45 Euro single and taxi fare home at night was 5 Euro. Taxi to and from airport was 15 Euro each way. El Medano town is laid back and friendly. Predominantly Spanish, so good choice of local food and tapas, which is all good with me. The apartment was clean and tidy, with modern Ikea fixtures and fittings. The balcony was south facing, so if you havent had enough sun on the beach you can top up your tan when you get home to enjoy a gin and tonic at the end of the day! The grounds were well maintained and quite with only about 50% of units occupied during my stay. The pool was clean, if a little cool, but there were no sund beds provided so if you are a pool rather than beach sort of person it would not really suit you. Manel, the local agent, couldn't have been more helpful and even dropped me off in town to stock up at the supermarket when i first arrived!
Thank you Jason. It has been a pleasure to host you and you are wellcome for your next "sunny break"! The beginning of 2015 it is projected to start a Commercial Center at a walking distance with supermarket, amenities and shops. All the best. See you soon back.
