The Province of Alajuela region
Encantada Guest House, is located about 10 miles west from the town of La Fortuna. But only a few minutes from many of the Adventure Attractions, such as the Arenal National Park, ATV's, Hiking, Ziplines, Eco Zoo, Butterfly Gardens, and Horseback Riding to a hidden waterfall, Fishing Kayaking and more! Whereas El Castillo is a wonderful & unique village located in the countryside near Lake Arenal, La Fortuna is a small bustling tourist town, very busy and filled with Restaurants and souvenir shops and tour operators.
You can take advantage of all the wonderful things to see and do, from either locale. It just depends on the type of experience you are looking for. Fast paced and super busy or slower paced and tranquil, in either case, I will be happy to help you in planning and booking your activities .
We do strongly suggest renting a 4x4 SUV, due to the rough condition of the roads in the country and we suggest you arrive at your primary destination before 6PM, as it gets dark in Costa Rica very early. The roads are not an obstacle to driving after dark, but caution must be used because there can be potential hazards, like animals in the road or people walking or riding bikes in the darkness.
The Northern Zone in Costa Rica is Primarily Mountainous and Very Rural. It offers Incredible Beauty, A Pristine & Wonderful 25 Mile Long Lake and a Simmering Active Volcano. This area is a Tourist Mecca and offers great opportunity to experience the many and varied activities and wildlife of Costa Rica. Because the area has its own Volcano Governed Micro Climate..it is much Cooler and Wetter than the Beaches, which give rise to incredible Rainforest Abundance.

"A slice of heaven ..."
We spent two weeks in Costa Rica in February 2013 and Hacienda Encantada was our first destination. It is lovely. It's at the top of a mountain, remote, quiet, with beautiful gardens. We saw an ocelet on our way up the mountain the first day, and while there, saw and heard so much wildlife. We loved drinking coffee on the patio in the mornings and listening to the sounds of the jungle, or drinking wine while lying in the hammocks. There are a few good restaurants in town, too - Pizza Johns was our favorite. Nita connected us with a man who took us on a horseback ride to a private waterfall (spectacular day!), and we connected later with another man who took us hiking near the volcano. Skip the touristy hotels and stay here instead. You won't regret it.
