The Community of Madrid region
Madrid is the geographic center of the Iberian Peninsula and the capital of Spain. We are located just 60 kilometers north of the city in a small traditional village, but with easy access to both the city center and Barajas international airport. Locally you will villages much unchanged in the last 100 years with narrow cobbled streets and stone built houses.
For the more active traveler there are water sports and fishing on the lake and many miles of signed hiking trails ideal for walkers or bikers. In this part of Spain you can expect hot summers from May until the end of September, but being in the mountains at a height of 1000m the nights are cool and pleasant to sleep.
Spain’s capital has a population of 4M and is a cosmopolitan city that retains the relaxed Spanish way of life. Madrid’s attractions include 3 internationally famous art galleries, a royal palace, grand public squares, beautiful parks and museums holding treasures of the past. Local and international cuisine can be found throughout the city.
We are also well located for a number of day trips to some of central Spain’s famous historic cities:
Segovia is most famous for her aqueduct, used until the late 19th century and built by the Romans. The 1525 Cathedral, the last great Gothic Church in Spain and the Royal Castle or ‘Alcazar’ built in 1410 are both worth visiting. The Royal palace of ‘La Granja de San Ildefonso’ is a wonderful 18th century building and summer home during the times of Philip V. There are beautiful landscaped gardens to see as well as the palace.
The historic walled city of Toledo was the former capital of Spain and was home to the famous 16th century painter ‘El Greco’. In the middle ages Toledo was a melting pot of Christian, Jewish and Muslim culture and the city retains influences from all. The Royal Palce, the Cathedral and the old city walls are worthy of a visit.
50 Kms to the north west of Madrid lies the Palace of ‘San Lorenzo de El Escorial’, built by Philip II between 1563 and 1584. The Royal Pantheon hold the funeral urns of past monarch’s and Flemish, Italian and Spanish works of art hang in the museum. The library holds an impressive collection of some 40,000 volumes.
