The Edinburgh region
Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland, the second largest city in Scotland after Glasgow and the seventh-most populous in the United Kingdom.
Located in the south-east of Scotland, Edinburgh lies on the east coast of the Central Belt, along the Firth of Forth, near the North Sea. Owing to its spectacular, rugged setting and vast collection of Medieval and Georgian architecture, including numerous stone tenements, it is often considered one of the most picturesque cities in Europe.
Edinburgh is the seat of the Scottish Parliament. The city was one of the major centres of the Enlightenment, led by the University of Edinburgh, earning it the nickname Athens of the North. The Old Town and New Town districts of Edinburgh were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. There are over 4,500 listed buildings within the city. In the 2009 mid year population estimates, Edinburgh had a total resident population of 477,660. Edinburgh is well-known for the annual Edinburgh Festival, a collection of official and independent festivals held annually over about four weeks from early August. The number of visitors attracted to Edinburgh for the Festival is roughly equal to the settled population of the city. The most famous of these events are the Edinburgh Fringe (the largest performing arts festival in the world), the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Other events include the Hogmanay street party (31 December), Burns Night (25 January), St. Andrew's Day (30 November), and the Beltane Fire Festival (30 April).
The city attracts 1 million overseas visitors a year, making it the second most visited tourist destination in the United Kingdom, after London. In a 2009 YouGov poll, Edinburgh was voted the "most desirable city in which to live in the UK". Edinburgh was also rated The Best Place to Live in Channel 4's 2007 4Homes survey.
The beautiful city of Edinburgh is an enchanting place for a spring and summer break. With a wonderful menu of events and festivals including the spring International Science Festival, the Film Festival and the Edinburgh Festivals including the Jazz, Book and Fringe - you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Add to this our diverse range of attractions from Dynamic Earth and Edinburgh Castle to the Camera Obscura and Royal Yacht Britannia, you are in for a perfect time. For a capital city, Edinburgh is a surprisingly green place and, even in the heart, you are never far from wide open spaces where you can take in amazing views, have a picnic, or just relax and enjoy the great outdoors long into the summer nights.
The surrounding coast and countryside of East, West and Midlothian is perfect for beach walks in Gullane or Yellowcraigs with walking ideas along the Pentland Hills and country parks like Beecraigs near Linlithgow. The area also has a wealth of ideas for days out or longer stays with things to see and do like the Union Canal, The Scottish Mining Museum and The Scottish Seabird Centre.
Indulge yourself too with the vast array of places to eat with our many eatscotland eateries throughout the area, offering seasonal, locally sourced produce.

What a lovely little apartment right in the city...the location was perfect, the apartment was compact but perfect for what we required and also had free Wi-Fi access which was great. The fact that it has a garage was a bonus as we parked our car and walked everywhere for the duration of our trip. The one thing that would have been better was if there was toilet roll, washing up liquid etc there and that we didn't have to go out and buy them. However all in all we would recommend this property to any single person or couple visiting Edinburgh if you want everything on your doorstep- this said the apartment bedroom was at the back of the property and extremely quiet to sleep in. We will definitely stay here again next time in Edinburgh.
