THE UNIQUE TOURIST BEACH RESORT "MALI I ROBIT"
Mali i Robit is a beach resort town with low-rise buildings. It is unique in Albania because it is in a coastal area surrounded by a lovely pine forest and at the same time, it is not far from the many restaurants, bars and shops in the two largest Albanian cities Durrës and Tirana.
PEAK SEASON: Mali i Robit is great for families with children because this is the part of Albania that has the large sandy beaches (from Velipojë to Kavajë), lots of fun beach activities, and shallow water that is safe for swimming. There is also live Albanian music and dancing in the evening.
Please note: the absolute peak season is from approx. 20 July - 20 August and Mali i Robit is very busy. If you are looking for a quieter period, May, June, beginning July, end of August, September and October are recommended.
SHOULDER/LOW SEASON: Albania is quiet everywhere except Durrës and Tirana, so if you are looking for a relaxing holiday in a beachfront apartment, a bit of sightseeing, and the added bonus of great shopping and exciting nightlife nearby, Mali i Robit is the perfect place to be. May-June and September-October also enjoy 30° weather, swimming is great, the roads are less busy, and you can have the beach all to yourself!
It starts getting quite hot beginning of April, so you can swim in the sea from approximately the end of April to the end of October. The resort attracts a mixture of international and Albanian tourists.
GETTING AROUND: Everything is within walking distance and there are taxis at 'Klajdi' restaurant (50 m) and shuttle buses to Durrës, Tirana, Berat etc. from the main road (400 m). You can rent a car at the airport or a rental car can be delivered to you directly at the apartment. There is private parking next to the apt.
FOOD/SHOPPING: There are food shops close to the apartment + a big supermarket 2 km away. Boutiques, big shopping centers, restaurants and bars in Durrës are open late.
RESTAURANTS: Many restaurants serve fresh, inexpensive seafood, traditional Albanian cuisine, pizza ... and dinner can also be delivered directly to you at the beach! :)
ALBANIAN MUSIC AND DANCING: Live music and dancing in the resort (July and August). 'Kali i Trojan' is 3 km north.
CLUBBING: 'Tropikal' nightclub is 5 km north, and there are lots of night clubs in Durrës and Tirana.
MEDICAL ATTENTION: Clinic in town + ambulance service direct to Durrës/Tirana hospital.

"Beautiful apartment in great location for a relaxing beach holiday"
The two of us had a fantastic stay in this apartment in Mali i Robit. It is exactly what it says on the tin when it says beachfront, literally less than 15 seconds from door to sand, and we loved sitting on the balcony to watch stunning sunsets. Mali i Robit seems to be a great alternative to the busier Durres 15km up the road, which is overdeveloped, and it wasn’t too crowded when we stayed in late June/early July. There were plenty of parasols and sunbeds to hire (3 euros/300 leke for the day, one also provided by the apartment), jet skis, and pedalos. Just next to the apartment building is the really lively Fa Fa Tourist Complex, with a pool, restaurant, and bar. We didn’t use the pool, but the apartment’s residents apparently get a discount so if you’re fed up of the beautiful Adriatic you have other choices. We really liked their beach cafe to get out of the sun in the afternoon, the nightly music and bar, and entertainment at the weekends. The music could be quite loud until quite late, which bothered us some nights, but we really liked being able to go for a drink with entertainment so close. The apartment was absolutely spotless and comfortable with everything we needed (air con, mosquito nets, cooking equipment, cleaning products, bedding and towels, beach kit and beach games, and wifi which, though other reviews say was not available in the apartment itself, had the modem right in there and which worked perfectly). What may be a downside is that there is only one proper bed, so for more than 2 people it is only a sofa bed, but the sofa did seem comfy enough, and the apartment is also up on the fourth floor with no lift. Cindy and all her family made the whole process easy and stress free, from the first online request, through booking, paying, and arriving and leaving, just one example being organising a private taxi to and from the airport and apartment which worked without a hitch. Cindy was so helpful and always contactable during our stay to help with questions, and Vladimir was very sweet and friendly and met us and helped us out during our stay. Thank you to you both! More generally about Albania, we were a little nervous about going as we knew very little about the country, but we were really pleasantly surprised and would both recommend wholeheartedly that you go and visit this beautiful country. People were friendly and tried to help, despite our lack of Albanian. We would recommend that you learn a few useful Albanian phrases because English was not widely spoken, though Italian seemed to be useful in some places. We had to resort to a lot of gesturing and writing! We found things to be extremely good value for money, like eating out, and it was convenient that it was possible in most places to use euros as well as Albania’s currency the Leke. If you want a relaxing beach holiday this area and apartment are perfect. The lack of in-your-face tourism infrastructure is really refreshing and was just what we wanted and needed. If you’re looking for the chance to sight-see in this fascinating country on the other hand, it’s less clear cut. We did not rent a car so were entirely reliant on public transport, which was a real experience in itself, and was quite complicated. To visit the historic city of Berat for example would have meant a 5 hour round trip by bus. With a car, more is possible but be prepared for the hair-raising experience of Albanian roads. All in all, this apartment was great for sun, sea, and sand, and you will not be disappointed if you stay here!
Thank you so much for your lovely & informative review. Just a few things: The confusion is understandable, but our Loft apartment is on the 3rd floor, not the 4th floor. There are only a few stairs to the main floor, then 3 floors. In total, there are 3.5 flights of stairs to reach the Loft. Our 2 apartments are in a small low-rise building, so an elevator isn't really necessary. We also have an apartment on the 2nd floor just below the Loft (2.5 flights of stairs) that is available to large families of 5. Both apartments have a fabulous view, but the Loft has the best view of the entire building. Both of our apartments are perfect for single travellers, couples, or families with children. It is possible for 4 or more adults to rent both apartments if extra comfort and privacy are desired. As advertised, there is a queen-size bed in the main bedroom and a large couch in the living room that pulls out into a double bed. We also provide a single bed upon request. Our 1-bedroom beachfront apartments that accommodate 1 – 5 guests provide an economical alternative to 2-bedroom beachfront apartments of similar standard, which rent for approx. 30 euros or more per night. Public transportation in Albania is extremely cheap but it takes time, so travellers should start their sightseeing days early. Certain places are not accessible by bus. Mali i Robit – Berat is approx. 85 km. It takes about 2.5 hours to go to Berat by bus, but the journey is interesting and Berat is a Unesco site. It takes 1.5 hours to drive to Berat if you know the road and approx. 2 hours if you don't. Rental cars in Albania are quite cheap, particularly in the low season. Helpful Hint : It is practical and economical to rent a car from the airport, drive to the apartment, do a bit of sightseeing, and return the car to the airport. Driving in Tirana can be hair raising (so it is best to park behind the « National History Museum » and then walk or take a quick taxi to the lively « Blloku District »), but other destinations are not quite the same – it just takes time as some roads in Albania are still not very good. Please note : Albanian roads become extremely busy in July and August, particularly going to the south. If you rent a car from September – June (and first week July, last week August) the roads are much less congested.
