Location description from owner
The England region
Beamish has easy access to the A1, which will take you further north to Alnwick and the Heritage Coast, where a day can be spent exploring the many historic castles and friendly villages set amongst unspoilt golden sandy beaches. Not too far away is the Metro Centre - one of the largest shopping centres in Europe with an abundance of shops and eateries. For cricket fans, Durham County Cricket Club’s ground, ’The Riverside’, is a short drive away at Chester-le-Street. The cottage is in an ideal location for exploring all the north eastern counties, while the city of Durham with its lovely cathedral and river walks should not be missed. Shops ½ mile, pub and restaurant 2 minutes walk.
Beamish Museum, the open-air ’Living Museum of the North’ which recreates life in the North East over various points in history, including a working coal mine, village, farm and tram system, makes a great day out. The Beamish Valley is one of the most important archaeological landscapes in England. A picturesque river setting, it boasts country inns and gastro pubs serving home cooked food. A 15 minute walk up the back road and you will find Tanfield Railway the world’s oldest working railway and engine shed.

“FABULOUS COTTAGE IN EXCELLENT LOCATION”
We booked this cottage for 3 nights (min book) over the weekend of our son's wedding at the Black Horse which is a charming pub/restaurant/wedding venue just yards up a hill within the grounds - you can walk - just a track. We live locally so in fact were only about 10 minutes from home - we know the area well and the location of the cottage is brilliant. It is surrounded by countryside (we had our little dog there one night and it was perfect for him) and it's so peaceful and yet you're only 20 minutes or so from town (Newcastle) and even nearer to the Metrocentre. However you do need transport as there isn't a shop within walking distance. You have the facilities of the Black Horse which is a great gastropub with delicious food, on your doorstep. The cottage itself was extremely well equipped and the interior design and fittings were excellent. It was very clean - i couldn't fault it. If you walk from the Black Horse down to the cottage it is very dark and a torch wouldn't go amiss! Plenty of outdoor space to have a bbq - however i would say the outdoor furniture does need attention or replacing. That said - overall a great place to stay - you won't be disappointed!!
“Thoroughly relaxing holiday”
Well what can we say about Huckleberry Cottage!! This lovely hideaway is just what was needed, peaceful surroundings, views over fields and meadows with lovely walks near by beside a stream. The property was well equipped and had WIFI which is such a bonus when holidaying with a teenager daughter!!. Beds extremely comfy, bathroom always warm, underfloor heating lovely, was lovely to have a dishwasher. The only thing which I would change is that the curtains in the bedrooms were black out as when the sun rises it shines through the curtains in the bedrooms and also the outside light is on all night as it was on a timer (this is the only negative thing). So kept waking up really early. With Beamish Museum just down the road you can pop in for as long as you want to especially when you have an unlimited ticket. Easy access to Gateshead, Metro Centre, Newcastle and The Angel of North. Will definitely be back. Thanks Grace and the team At the Black Horse Pub.
“THE OUTSTANDING HUCKLEBERRY COTTAGE.”
To all, as an avid outdoor couple this cottage has a little bit of everything to offer good walks and cycling a beautiful railway on the door step. On the other side the social content has again everything in the form of local hostelries for good food and beers and wines. While using the conservatory and being in total relax mode the wildlife and birdlife are outstanding!
“Superbly appointed holiday cottage, ideal for a relaxing break.”
My wife and I stayed for two nights, and wish it had been more. The cottage was comfortable, clean, had everything we needed (and more) and we wanted for nothing. The proprietors (who also own the excellent gastro-pub just a few minutes stroll away) were friendly and helpful, and I can thoroughly recommend this property. I have no doubt we will stay there again.
“Beautiful and cosy”
This cottage is an absolutely beautiful place to stay. It has been decorated to a very high standard, beds are great, plenty of (large) towels, kitchen well equipped. The conservatory was wonderful: even at this time of year the sun would warm it up quickly and we could enjoy our lunch 'outside', in spite of English weather. And in the evening, we enjoyed the gas fire and the cosy living room. The Black Horse provided great meals all through the day, just a few minutes walk uphill. Certainly a place we would like to revisit!
“Excellent cottage near to fantastic pub - great place to visit”
We stayed here in November 2012 as it is located within a short walking distance of the Black Horse Pub, where we had our wedding. The cottage has a very pleasant outlook with good amenities and a well appointed kitchen. The bed was comfy and we had a great time. Enough said.
“Amazing - Country Cottage with every modern conveinence”
The pictures for this cottage do not do it justice, my partner and I arrived at the Cottage and were very amazed. The cottage is set within a minutes's walk of the delightful Black Horse Pub, where you can always pop to for amazing locally sourced food if you can't face cooking yourself. However with the beautiful Range cooker, hot pot and fondue set you really can't resisit catering for yourself! The cottage's classic stone floor is cosily heated with underfloor heating and their is a roaring fire in the living room. The beautifl sun room conservatory is ideal for eating your dinner whilst taking is peaceful views of the surrounding hills. The bedrooms are tastefully decorated with really comfortable beds and the master bedroom even has a plasma TV on the wall. Their is wifi throughout the cottage and there are games and a large TV in the country classic master living room. We really enjoyed our stay here and will be returning next year, I'm even booking a 3 night stay for my parents as a Xmas gift! I cannot speak highly enough about Huckleberry cottage, my partner and I loved it! Only 15 minutes (£15 taxi!) to Newcastle & 25 to Tynemouth too so a perfect little location!
“Lovely cottage in idyllic location”
We had a lovely stay at Huckleberry Cottage, every effort has been made by the owners to create well equipped accommodation and the location is really outstanding. It literally is in the middle of a field (with vehicle access) so there is no through traffic, apart from the odd dog walker, which meant a really peaceful stay with beautiful countryside views. The bed was very comfortable with plump pillows and plenty of soft towels in the bathroom and no end of hot water! The kitchen is also very well equipped, it even has a slow cooker and a fondue set. I would highly recommend this as a place to stay and only wish we'd had time to try the food in the pub at the top of the hill.
