The Caithness and Sutherland region

Mey Cliff Cottage is located in the small seaside hamlet of Scarfskerry, Caithness. It is in a beautiful private location, 200 metres away from the nearest other property. It is located right on the coastline, overlooking the Pentland Firth and the Orkney Islands in the distance. You can sit and watch the ships going by in the distance as they ply between the Atlantic and the North Sea from the comfort of the lounge where we have big picture windows to maximise the 360 degree views. Sunrises and sunsets are a beauty to behold particularly during the long days of summer when light seems never-ending. Even on stormy days there is plenty to see as the sea crashes on the rocks below.
In the distance to the west you can see Dunnet Head, the most northerly point on the British mainland. To the east is the Castle of Mey, the Queen Mother's residence which is now visited every year by Prince Charles as the chieftain of the Mey Highland Games (held every August).
Caithness is the most northerly county in mainland UK. It is remarkably unspoilt and has beautiful countryside. John O'Groats is a five mile drive down the coast. The towns of Wick and Thurso have all the necessary amenities and are a short drive away. Mey Cliff Cottage is a great base to explore the northern highlands. The hills to the west are an hours drive. Day trips to the Orkneys are also possible from the nearby harbours at Gills Bay, John O'Groats and Scrabster. Those who enjoy sports can take in the excellent freshwater and saltwater fishing on offer as well as plentiful unhurried golf available at the challenging courses at Wick, Thurso and Reay.
For those who just want to relax in peace and quiet and watch the wildlife, Mey Cliff Cottage is the perfect base.

Dunnet Head

The area is very unspoilt and is known as the northern highlands. The county of Caithness has a very interesting history and was part of the Norse kingdom until the 15th Century when it became part of Scotland. The place names reflect this unique heritage. Caithness is known as the flow country with miles of unspoilt peat marshes where rare wildlife thrive in abundance. You can learn more about the geography and history of the area at the excellent 'Caithness Horizons' museum in Thurso. In a similar vein there is the Wick Heritage museum which takes you back to the herring fishing hey-day of the area in the late 19th century.

“Nice house, very comfortable, with a very nice view.”

Reviewed 21 Aug 2016

Perfect house, very clean, cosy, comfortable, with a nice sea view. We saw seals, daulphins, from the garden of the house. A nice place for those who wants walk, and visiting nature.

Hi Jerome we're glad you liked it and enjoyed your holiday. You'll be welcome back any time!

“Absolutely fabulous”

Reviewed 23 May 2014

Where to start... The accommodation was everything you could ever hope for and more. Spotlessly clean and it was comforting to know that you could contact someone if there was a problem, not that there was.The location was outstanding looking onto the sea you became mesmerised with listening and watching the waves and boats sailing by. I would highly recommend this to anyone. Thank you and as Arnie would say 'we'll be back'

Many thanks for your very kind words!
