"Happy, homely hideaway!"

Allanton Mill Cottage is a little gem of a place; it welcomes you from your very first steps inside. It is clear that Jeanette and Nigel have created this place out of love and that is exactly the feeling you get when you open the front door. The decor is cosy and colourful and every detail of the holiday maker's wish list has been thought of, even down to the underfloor heating in the shower room! We loved the open plan living/dining/kitchen area upstairs which was informal and relaxed for spending family time together. The bedrooms are a great size and the bottom one opens out onto a private decking area, which hangs above the burn running through the property. The setting is spectacular - a little woodland retreat. Allanton Mill is the sort of place you can't wait to get back home to after a day's activities. We couldn't wait to get back, open a bottle of chilled wine and warm our toes in front of the log burning stove. An absolute treat of a retreat!

"Excellent cottage in great country location with delightful features"

This is an excellent cottage in a fine rural location, with beautiful rustic garden running down to river, great for kids if supervised. Cottage is fitted out fully, even down to a flask for your picnic! It is very well maintained to a high standard. Spotlessly clean throughout. Bedrooms very comfortable with quality linen. Log wood burner very nice on a cold evening, all logs provided. The raised decking leading off the lower bedroom is a real feature. A nice sitting area a few steps down from the entrance a great sun trap and perfect for a glass of wine, or two, in the evening overlooking the garden and river. Owners are next door and are really friendly and do not intrude. They seem genuinely concerned that you have an enjoyable stay. For the standard of accommodation seems great value to me.

"Hidden Gem"

I am always selfishly reluctant to write reviews on the amazing places I have had the pleasure to experience, but this hidden gem is not to be missed! Nothing is too much trouble for Jeannette & Nigel. Communication prior to our visit was excellent, and they have bent over backwards to accommodate us; from greeting on our arrival, to waving goodbye as we left, we were made to feel welcome for the entirety of our stay. The Mill also comes with a welcome pack which provides an abundance of useful information. Jeannette and Nigel are extremely friendly and approachable, and will always offer advice on the town, where to dine out, where to go, what to see etc. The former water mill is set in a truly stunning location, with an abundance of scenic walks, cycle routes, castles, golf courses, and everything you need for the perfect countryside break. Allanton Mill was absolutely immaculate throughout and well equipped with TV, DVD, Wood burner (with an endless supply of free logs), dinner table and chairs, fridge, microwave, washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, and two spacious bedrooms, with a downstairs balcony, which was perfect to enjoy and embrace the countryside ambiance. There was also a patio area with table, chairs and BBQ, which we put to great use. We highly recommend this hidden gem, and have already booked again to enjoy with friends this summer.

"Fantastic week at the Mill."

Relaxing quiet and lovely setting. Mill is warm, cosy, clean, with hosts welcoming and friendly. Wonderful welcome pack, lots of local information to help you explore. Mill presented very well. Log burner fantastic! Views over countryside amazing. We loved it, can't wait to go again.

"Relaxing retreat in the Scottish countryside"

This is a fantastic conversion of an old mill. The interior is fresh, modern, clean and well equipped. On a chilly day the wood burner makes it feel cosy. When the sun shines the balcony is great for a relaxing drink or meal. It is possible to completely relax in the quiet surroundings. However, should you need to keep contact with the outside world Wi-Fi is available. This is a great base to go for walks or cycle from. Should you wish to travel further, Glasgow or Edinburgh are within daily travelling distance.

"A great place to get away from it all!"

We have stayed at the Mill before so we knew what to expect and we were not disappointed. Even in the cold of February the log burners kept us as warm as Jeanette's welcome. The whole building is spotless and set in a beautiful location with good walks and great scenery for anybody who likes to get outdoors. You are a short drive away from the town of Dumfries which has everything you can need for a short stay in the area. The Mill is in a secluded area but not isolated which might make it a bit quiet for some however Auldgirth is a short walk away and it has a lively pub. Probably the best recommendation I can give is that we will be back again when we get the chance!

"Home from home"

Stayed here with friends. The standard of the accommodation and furnishings far exceeds what I have experienced in other similar places. Jeannette has thought of everything. It's tempting to just stay in the Mill listening to the logs crackling in the wood burner and the sound of the water in the burn but there is so much to see and do in the area. Don't miss a trip to the Solway Coast, the Land rover safari at Drumlanrigg Castle is brilliant and make sure you visit the sculptures nearby. Lovely comfy bed and very well equipped; the Mill is a real home from home. Didn't want to leave, would definitely recommend and will be back. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

So, you're looking for a country cottage full of character, secluded and private but not too far from restaurants, shopping and places of interest? Easy access to hills, lochs and sight-seeing? Little more than an hour to Glasgow or Edinburgh? Or somewhere to hide away from the world, perhaps on a romantic break? Look no further. This superbly refurbished watermill meets your every need - and more! Comfort, quality furnishings and a well-fitted kitchen. A beautiful garden area with patio and a fabulous decked balcony with great views. Enjoy listening to the river as it flows through the garden, watch the red squirrels scurrying around and pheasants wandering the garden. And, in the evening, relax by the wonderful log burner. Bliss! Add to all this two delightful hosts in Nigel and Jeannette who live on-site and are more than willing to advise/assist. We had a most wonderful week in this amazing cottage, arriving to a snow-covered winter wonderland which progressed to Spring sunshine. So why are you hesitating? Go for it - before someone else books your dates!
