For families there is so much to see and do for fun days out like Cream O Galloway, Mabie Forest Farm, Camera Obscure, Aviation Museum and Drumlanrigg Castle and grounds.
"Ignore the Highlands and Islands for once and explore Dumfries and Galloway in the south west instead. The weather is better, the Solway coast has lots of secluded bays, there are dozens of castles such as Threave and Caerlaverock, and as the region has few main roads, it is much quieter."

5 miles south of Dumfries,7 miles north of Dalbeattie, about 10 miles from Southerness. What can't you find? There's supermarkets, small shops, town, countryside, Forrest walks and beautiful beaches. Heron Lodge was in a great position for all of this and it was clean, comfortable, well equipped and a good size for myself, Hubby, 15 year old Son & two dogs. All this and perfect weather,
Thank you so much for your review of Heron Lodge and glad you and your family enjoyed your stay. Heron Lodge is indeed a great base in which to explore the area of Dumfries and Galloway. There is so much to see and do around the surrounding countryside or take the coastal routes to find more great walks and beaches. I do hope you return to stay again soon @ Heron Lodge. "Gorgeous views with plenty to do"
The lodge was in a beautiful peaceful setting secluded just minutes from Mabie Forest. The views were lovely and we even saw a woodpecker in the garden. There are plenty of places to see, we ventured out to the coast, went for walks in the forest, drove out to a castle and more. Would definitely return here.
