Location description from owner

The England region

Blessed by a temperate climate throughout the year Cornwall is one of the warmest counties in the United Kingdom.
With its rugged coastlines and quaint fishing villages to explore, historical places to visit, sandy beaches to play on, activities like surfing kayaking and sailing to occupy the more adventurous and a reputation for incredible local food and drink– there is something in Cornwall for everyone to enjoy!

Heading west from DOWNDERRY and SEATON is LOOE, a popular fishing village with sandy beach, pubs, cafes, shops and harbour from which you can fish, go crabbing or take a boat to LOOE ISLAND. Further along the coast is picturesque TALLAND BAY a popular spot for those walking the magnificent coastal path between LOOE and POLPERRO. There is a delightful beach café where you can indulge in homemade snacks, ice-creams, or a Cornish cream tea.

Further west is the historic, picture postcard fishing village of POLPERRO characterised by its narrow streets, quaint cottages, great pubs and shops!

Still heading west is the charming and nautical town of FOWEY- home of the Daphne Du Maurier Festival and annual Fowey Regatta.

Travel east from DOWNDERRY and SEATON along the breathtaking WHITSAND BAY coastal road to 'Cornwall's Forgotten Corner' – The RAME PENINSULA. WHITSAND BAY is a 5 mile stretch of beach framed by the majestic RAME HEAD. This popular surfing destination is home to the award winning restaurant “The View” andwas recently featured on Channel 4's "Cornwall” with Caroline Quentin. The Cliff Top Cafe hidden a short walk from the road opposite the caravan park is also a great place to grab lunch or an early morning breakfast or try the Eddystone Cafe down on the beach. East of RAME HEAD (with stunning views across to the Eddystone Lighthouse) sit the delightful twin villages of KINGSAND andCAWSAND which gaze across PLYMOUTH SOUND and along South Devon's shores.

Travel further East from Kingsand and Cawsand to the Cornwall Devon border where beautiful MOUNT EDGECUMBE COUNTRY PARK is located at CREMYLL- renown locally for its delightful Orangery and garden. From here a pedestrian ferry can take you to PLMOUTH and lands you a stone's throw from the Royal William Yard where TV Chef Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall has a superb restaurant. Other access to the attractions of PLYMOUTH (notably the famous Barbican and Hoe waterfronts and National Marine Aquarium) is via car ferry from TORPOINTor via the Famous TAMAR BRIDGE at SALTASH

Slightly further afield but still within easy reach are the world famous EDEN PROJECT and HELIGAN GARDENS, and National Trust properties of LANHYDROCK, COTHELEand ANTONY. Similarly close are the rugged delights of BODMINMOOR and DARTMOOR and the tranquil beauty of the SOUTH HAMS.

The North Coast can be reached in 45minutes, and if you fancy some cycling there is the CAMEL TRAIL at PADSTOW also famous for Rick Stein'stakeaway fish and chips and restaurant.

Downderry

The villages of Seaton and Downderry are an ideal location for families and those who love exploring the great outdoors: rock pooling; body boarding; kayaking; canoeing; snorkelling; walking; cycling; bird watching; fishing; kite flying.
Seaton's beachside park includes a children's playground, brand new personal training equipment and boule court. Seaton has a family and dog friendly beach with cafe, places to eat, pub and shop. The Seaton Country Park - a nature reserve and designated area of natural beauty is ideal for walking and cycling. Follow the river for 2 miles up the winding valley, past ponds, woods and beauty spots and you'll find the welcoming Copley Arms pub at HESSENFORD. For animal lovers there is the famous Monkey Sanctuary just a mile or so out of the village.

DOWNDERRY beach is perfect for family beach time and exploring the rock pools at low tide. It is also a haven for surfers and water sport lovers alike, with a small slipway giving access for those launching boats a short distance away. There is a well-stocked local store/post office, Inn on the Shore pub and fine dining at the Blue Plate Restaurant, which is highly recommended.
For the avid golfer there is Whitsand Bay Golf Course about 10 minutes drive away, or Bin Down in Looe or the famous St Mellion Golf Club near Saltash. Thrill seekers should try nearby Kart World and the UKs biggest zip wire at the Adrenalin Quarry (Menheniot)!

“Relaxing quiet spot. Great place for taking the dog on holiday”

Reviewed 25 Jul 2016

We really enjoyed our stay in The Moohey. There is a lot to see in the area and it is very peaceful. The Moohey had everything we needed and the room layout was great for two couples. Our stay was made extra special by Pat, Mary and family who are so helpful and accommodating.

Owner's reply: Such kind words Ann! Thank you so much -it was lovely to have you all here.We really hope to see you again.

“Terrific - a perfect break!!”

Reviewed 20 Apr 2014

We booked the Moohey for a week's break in Cornwall and chance to get together with our children for our Ruby wedding anniversary celebration. The whole experience was an absolute delight!! The Moohey is a wonderful place and Mary and Pat and their children are absolutely lovely and couldn't have been more helpful. After speaking to Mary the evening before we arrived and mentioning that I had failed to get a table in the local restaurant for our first night's celebratory meal she offered (and succeeded!) to arrange transport and see if she could get a table for us in a restaurant that they knew - and we would never have found!! And the meal was delicious!! All this and red flowers and wine when we arrived - a really thoughtful touch! There were loads of great places to visit, lots of great walks - we didn't manage them all- but would not hesitate in returning to the Moohey to finish the job! Loved all the animals and stunning views - well worth the money in our opinion. A definite ten out of ten! Thank you Mary and Pat!

“Fantastic place to stay!”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2013

The Moohey is a beautiful barn and a great place to stay. Our party consisted of 3 teenagers, a toddler and 2 adults and the barn and location were perfect - meeting all our needs. If you want to go to the beach, the Whitsand bay stretch of coast is stunning. The beautiful villages of Cawsand and Kingsand are well worth a visit and the barn is only 45 minutes drive from the Eden project. We would love to visit again!

“My week at the Moohay”

Reviewed 8 Jul 2013

One week wasn't enough. My family and I just had the most wonderful week staying at the Moohay. On our last night we had dinner in nearby Looe, this topped off what has been one of our favourite holidays. The Moohay barn was very welcoming, with plenty of space for my boisterous family of 6. Great lawn for the kids to play footy, beautiful views and walks through the lanes, and along the cliffs. Total quiet and stillness at night to wake up to birdsong in the morning. This was a lovely memorable week to finish off our UK holidays. We will definitely come back.

“Great Place to enjoy beautiful surroundings and family time.”

Reviewed 7 Jul 2013

We stayed there with our daughter and husband and our two grandchildren We all love it so much to stay there, the surrounding is amazing ,you can relax in the big garden, Oliver loved to play football with his granddad and Lola was very curious for the chickens and picking up their eggs. There is so much to explore there(not only for the children) And if it's a little bit chilly in the evening you can relax at the beautiful fireplace and watch a nice film

“Beautiful Barn!”

Reviewed 19 May 2013

Thank you for such an enjoyable holiday! We had such a time staying at the Moohey. The barn is lovely:- light, airy, spacious and very comfortable. Great for our family. The location was perfect being just half a mile to the beach, village shop, pub and restaurant and it was very easy for us to get to other places like the Eden Project and Plymouth. Peace, quiet and relaxing with fabulous scenery. We would definitely come again!
