Description

This Grade II listed, mini Gothic castle was built in 1850 and is now a fairy-tale holiday home. It is believed to have been built as the gate house for the officers accommodation for the Dover Castle Garrison who were housed in an impressive crescent of homes in Victoria Park.

Now a romantic holiday destination, this cottage is perfect for romantic getaways from honeymoons and special anniversaries or birthdays, to an amazing place to stay for history enthusiasts. It is also perfect for families as children love the experience of staying in their own little castle.

I often work with guests to provide surprises for other members of their party, for example, arranging for flowers, chocolates and champagne to be left and even sometimes birthday cakes. If you have any special requirements, do contact me.

The Gate House is close to both Dover Castle, the town itself and also just a ten minute walk down to the picturesque promenade and shingle beach.

Location description from owner

The England region

Kent is renowned for its beauty and is not known as the Garden of England for nothing! The lush countryside is dotted with pretty villages as well as numerous castles and historic properties. The coast has vast stretches of beautiful sandy beaches alongside pretty seaside towns. Famous for its plethora of beautiful sandy beaches and annual folk week, Broadstairs is an olde-worlde seaside resort which is a must on a sunny day. There are several beaches to choose from including Viking Bay which is in the main town and Joss and Botany Bays which are more secluded. Broadstairs also has many quirky shops and restaurants and is the home of the Charles Dickens Museum.Canterbury is a beautiful city with many historic buildings, not least, the cathedral which is the oldest in England. Canterburys diverse shops are housed in many of the Citys oldest buildings and a river tour around the centre of town is one of the best ways to see the medieval architecture.

Dover

The Gate House is situated on the corner of Victoria Park, at the entrance to an impressive crescent of five storey houses which were once home to the Dover Garrison. Behind the Gate House, lies Dover Castle itself. Ten minutes walk down the hill you will reach both Dover town centre and the promenade and spotless shingle beach. Dover is an ideal place to stay to explore the Kent coast with its famous castle and White Cliffs. Just a short drive away you will find beautiful beaches at Broadstairs, fantastic shopping at Canterbury as well as its historic cathedral and the lovely seaside towns of Deal and Whitstable. It is also just perfect for day trips to France or Belgium as the Port of Dover is just 5 minutes by car or 20 minutes walk. Deal and Walmer Castles are a short 15 minute drive away. All three local castles are managed by English Heritage. A few minutes drive away is the quaint, but unspoilt, seaside town of Deal which has lots of independent shops close to the shingle beach and long pier. The Beach Parlour is a fantastic place to while away an hour watching the sea whilst enjoying one of their ice cream sundaes.

“Our own private castle!”

Reviewed 17 Mar 2014

The Gatehouse at Dover was the perfect location for our Valentine's Day getaway. Beautifully decorated and very cozy, it made a wonderful couple's retreat. It is also ideally located, with an easy and convenient walk to both the town of Dover and the Castle proper. The customer service provided during booking was also very friendly and helpful. We would not hesitate to return.

We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay. You booked a long time ahead to secure the Valentines weekend and it is so nice to hear that the Gate House lived up to expectations as the perfect romantic cottage.

“Wow, wow, wow”

This place is a jewel, a wonderful and unusual property. We went at Christmas and Michelle kindly put up tasteful decorations for us. It made our Christmas. The property is warm and has loads of character. You have your own tower with a glass roof and the bedroom is so luxurious. The house is warm and welcoming, the fire a treat (we loved just snuggling up on the leather sofa whilst watching TV. The kitchen has everything you need. You really feel like you are in your own private castle. I would definitely recommend this 100%.

Many thanks for your kind words Lea. I'm so glad you enjoyed your Christmas at the Gate House and hope we can welcome you back sometime very soon. Best regards, Michelle.
