Description

Set in two acres of land, a lovely converted 18th century barn overlooking beautiful orchards and open countryside, nestling at the end of a quiet lane. This deceptively spacious oak-beamed cottage is my home when I live in France. It has a relaxed lounge/dining area, with an open fire and doors opening onto the large terrace. There is comfortable seating for five and dining for 6 people. 3 bedrooms, two of which are doubles and one single.

There is also a sofabed and a cot. The large ground floor bedroom has a kingsize bed, en-suite shower room and a door opening onto the garden. The first floor bedrooms, again both beamed, has one double bed and the third bedroom has a single bed and a cot. The sun terrace overlooks the large front garden and is ideal for those leisurely breakfasts or al fresco dining and a barbecue is available for use.

The large front garden is dotted with fig and walnut trees and plenty of shrubs and is ideal for sun-bathing, while the rear

Location description from owner

The Aquitaine region

This region is renowned for its warm sunny summers which produce excellent grapes in the many vineyards in the area and fantastic fruit from the many plum orchards. There are stunning views to be seen from the many hilltop villages.

The large towns of Villeneuve sur Lot and Bergerac are half an hour's drive away and both have charming "old towns" well worth a visit. All services and facilities from shops, bars and restaurants to banks and doctors are here. The area is populated with bastide towns, all different but all equally charming. Markets are held in each of the towns weekly where the local produce can be tasted. During the summer months many of the towns have night markets which are very colourful events.

Day trips can be taken further afield, whether you want to visit the famous vineyards of St Emilion, the prehistoric caves at Lascaux or boat trips and canoeing along the Dordogne river. A visit to the medieval town of Sarlat is a must and will take you back to the times of The Three Musketeers with its narrow cobbled streets and beamed properties.

There are over 100 chateaux in this region, all of them different, but certainly interesting to visit, such as Biron and Bonaguil

Douzains

There are plenty of restaurants in the vicinity from which to savour the gastronic delights of the region. The restaurant at the Hotel des Ramparts in Castillonnes offers excellent gourmet meals at reasonable prices whereas the restaurant in the town's main street offers very good value for money meals or snacks. Other restaurants nearby worth a visit are those in Issigeac and Eymet.

Tennis courts are available in Castillonnes as well as the local swimming pool. There is also a lovely lake at Lougratte (10 mins away) where there is a waterslide, beach, barbecue facilities and changing rooms. Horse-riding is available in the next village of Serignac-Pebedou and there are 4 golf courses within half an hour's drive. For the children, a visit to the donkey sanctuary, 5 minutes away, where they can have rides or even take out a buggy pulled by a donkey!

Canoeing and fishing amongst other activities are available all along the Dordogne river and details can be obtained from the tourist office in Castillonnes.

The chateau at Monbazillac (25 mins) is open to the public and here you can also taste the dessert wines made from the chateau's own vineyards. The Route des Vins is also a drive through the local vineyards where you can stop off at the different wine houses of your choice for tastings of the region's wines. A map is provided.

“Excellent relaxing holiday to recharge the batteries.”

Reviewed 8 Sep 2011

A lovely three bedroom cottage in the middle of beautiful orchards. Very relaxing time was had by all with plenty to do in the nearby towns and villages. Cottage was well equipped with plenty of space for everyone to do their own thing if they wanted. Large outside area with plenty of privacy. Easy travel distance from airport but you do need a car to get around.
