Description from owner
This large renovated farmhouse is set in a tranquil hamlet surrounded by countryside, and is situated at the heart of the hamlet behind the old lavoir, where the women of the community used to come to wash their clothes. The only noise you are likely to encounter will be from the passing tractors and cows and at night you can sit on the beautiful terrace and enjoy star-gazing undisturbed by any competing light. In the daytime keep a lookout for the buzzards and deer that appear both in the garden and in the surrounding fields. The house, formerly two farmhouses and two barns, has been renovated to a high standard with quality fittings in the spacious kitchen and four bathrooms and downstairs toilet. The house has five bedrooms upstairs (three doubles, one with a double bed and twin single beds and one room with bunkbeds and a single folding bed plus an extra single mattress so it is possible to rearrange who sleeps where if desired); downstairs there is a bedroom with a double sofabed

The three double bedrooms upstairs are all ensuite, with bathroom 1 benefitting from a large corner bath, separate shower and two sinks. Both of the other ensuite bathrooms have a toilet, sink and bath with integrated shower. The very large garden and terrace are perfect for enjoying a barbecue and relaxing in total calm, or for watching the children playing on the trampoline, in the playhouse and on the climbing frame/swingset. The house is in a lovely location for gentle or longer, more challenging, bike rides (we have two adult bikes (one with child seat) and three young child (age 4-7ish) bikes available for borrowing), for trips into the wine country of Pouilly and Sancerre or simply for relaxing!
Location description from owner
The Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region
The Nièvre department is within the Burgundy region, located in the centre of France. It is an area with beautiful verdant countryside with rolling hills, perfect both for gentle and for more challenging cycling expeditions. It enjoys a relaxed pace of life, with many charming villages to explore and restaurants to discover. Burgundy is world-famous for its wines and also for its food, including some wonderful cheeses (including the famous Crottin de Chavignol - a goat’s cheese from Nievre) and charcuterie (including terrines, ham from the Morvan region and Clamecy andouillettes). The Charolaise meat from the region is renowned all over the world.
The administrative centre is Nevers , well worth a visit for its cultural attractions, including the Bernadette Soubirous (who it is said saw the Virgin Mary in Lourdes) centre in Nevers, which attracts more than 250,000 visitors a year. A beautiful old town to explore is Charité-sur-Loire, which is a stop on the Saint Jacques de Compostelle way and which is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. There are many castles in the region, some open to the public, and many waterways to explore, including the rivers Loire and Allier, both used from the 16th to 20th century for timber floating and now more tranquilly for pleasure boating, as are the Nivernais canal and the lateral canal of the Loire. There are also many lakes in the area, both in the Morvan and throughout the Nievre, where the many "plans d'eau" allow you to take part in water activities or simply relax on the grass beneath the trees and go for a swim in the lake to cool off.
Les Carres is a small hamlet of 20ish houses, centered around the local lavoir (where the women of the community used to wash their clothes). The renovated farmhouse lies directly behind the lavoir and the river source. The nearest small town is Donzy, lying 15km away, which is charming to wander around, with its roads of quaint old houses, lovely local restaurant and walnut oil producing mill. Cosne sur Loire, a further 15km beyond Donzy, has many shops and larger facilities, and just outside Cosne is La Ferme du Port d'Aubry - a working goat farm (with many other animals, including ponies on which during the summer months they can take rides) which the children will love to wander around (for free) with a farm shop, which sells local produce including (naturally) goats cheese, preserves, wines and beer. The towns of Sancerre and Pouilly sur Loire are a 30 minutes drive where you can sample the many world-famous wines, both within these lovely towns or by meandering through the countryside around. To the east is the beautiful Morvan forest region and slightly more north-easterly the gastronomic town of Vezelay is worth the 50km drive, both for its restaurants and beautiful abbey, one of the most important starting points for the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Another recommended destination is the Chateau du Saint Fargeau with its beautiful farm, through which the animals roam at will and love to be fed by the visitors. On the way to Saint Fargeau, just 15 minutes or so past Donzy, is the lovely town of St Armand en Puisaye, famous for its pottery - lovely for wandering around the dozens of potteries and stopping off in a restaurant or cafe.
Nearer to home the nearest boulangerie (bakery) is in Chateauneuf-val-de-Bargis which is 4 km away - this attractive village also has a small shop, a butchers and a pharmacy and tennis courts. Between Les Carres and the villages and towns around lie miles of quiet roads perfect for biking or wandering, whilst looking out for the local wildlife including buzzards, wild boar and deer.

“Beautifully renovated and spacious home in a picturesque French countryside setting close to Loire wineries!”
We are a family of 5, including 3 small children, and have stayed in this house three times. On each occasion we have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It is a great place to relax for a weekend, week or more. The house is newly remodeled on the inside and out with a large, eat-in kitchen and nicely appointed bathrooms. It has an enormous garden (and field) behind the house where our children enjoyed using the trampoline, climbing frame, swings, and sand box. They also enjoyed just running through the expanse of grass and trees that border the field. We used the home's patio on many occasions for drinks and barbecues. The center of the hamlet of Les Carres has a jeu de boules pitch, which is charming and only a few minutes' walk from the house. It made a nice destination when walking with our 2-year-old. If you're bringing children, the owners have left behind a great assortment of toys that are nicely hidden away in a downstairs bedroom. During our visits we made day trips to Sancerre and Pouilly-sur-Loire where we tasted wine and ate in lovely restaurants. Nearby Chateauneuf-val-de-Bargis is worth a short visit, as is Menou, which has a lovely chateau. The views from the surrounding hillsides are gorgeous and there are quaint spots for roadside picnics in the immediate vicinity. We will definitely return here again!
“Excellent, relaxing and fun in lovely French countryside.”
The house is a very large, beautiful and modern conversion of an old barn and horse stable. All modern elements of kitchen and bathrooms are provided. The on suite baths were amazing and the beds were very comfortable. The space was very clean, bright and spacious. We had some lovely evenings playing games and reading in front of the fireplace. The sleeping quarters are divided in two sections which is perfect to accomodate two families with children or extended family. The house is located in a rustic little town and is near many great Burgandy locations such as Sancerre and Vezelay. We loved driving around and discovering some of neighbouring hamlets. Perfect for a relaxing holiday away from it all!
“Brilliant country house! Luxurious, but totally comfortable”
We really loved our time here. It was luxurious, but was really comfortable as well. We traveled with young kids and it was perfect for them - lots of outdoors for them to explore, but we knew where they were. Cows in the fields next door, too! Plus, we did a day trip to Sancerre, which was really close, so the adults were happy as well! As a PS - the sky at night is spectacular. Without city lights nearby, we just sat on the terrace after the kids went to bed & stared up at the sky. Amazing.
“Beautiful house in the countryside”
We stayed at this house with a group of friends for a week and had a wonderful break. The house is a taxi ride from Cosne train station with easy access from Paris, though our group also had a car. The house has excellent road links. Once at the house we found it to be beautifully renovated with a wonderful modern kitchen and bathrooms. The living room is lovely and opens out to a huge patio at the back of the house with seemingly endless garden for kids to run around in. There's a village nearby with supermarket, bakery etc (for your croissants, baguettes, wine etc) and various lovely places to visit a short drive away. Of note is Donzy where we had a lovely dinner at La Grand Monarque. It's possible to do a day trip to places like Sancerre.... it's a great base. Being so far outside a large town meant that night sky was the clearest I have ever seen. I saw multiple shooting starts and could clearly see the milky way. Be prepared to crane your neck upwards while you drink wine and chat with friends. Great memories!
“Perfect retreat with home luxuries - just what we needed - relaxing and refreshing”
We really didn't know what to expect having never been to this spot in France before but we were not disappointed. The area was green, fragrant, fresh and just perfect for a relaxing few days away undisturbed, without being too far from bars and shops. The house is spacious yet full of soul and character - the fireplace alone is worth the trip, as is the endless garden. The house is finished to the very highest standard. And when we did encounter the locals, they were so lovely. If you want endless nightlife and noise, hustle and bustle, this isn't for you - this is a place to make your own entertainment, with your own music, food and timekeeping, and that's exactly why we loved it so much. We're due to return in 2013 as soon as we can sort out the time off from work. Highly recommend.
“Comfort and peace - total relaxation”
My husband and I went with our two children aged 10 and 7. The house is spacious and equipped with all creature comforts, including a superb dining kitchen, giving onto the private patio and field to the rear. Situated in a tiny hamlet, this really was a 'get away from it all' holiday. The nearest village for fresh bread and supplies is less than 5 mins by car, which is essential, but we found the area perfect for safe cycling with the children (we used the bicycles at the property), paid several visits to the cheap and lovely outdoor pool at Donzy, and made various trips out including canoeing and a day trip to Sancerre, to stock up for the return trip home. A lovely house to relax in, and a great holiday.
