The Basse-Normandie region
With its rolling hills, picturebook farms and hidden villages, Normandy is one of the most beautiful areas of France. During the Summer, there are local markets, annual festivals and lots of fetes and activities for the children in most villages and towns. This is cider and calvados (apple liquor) country and there are many local farms that sell direct to the public.
Within easy reach of the Normandy landing beaches, 'Suisse Normande' with its deep gorges, kayaking and treetop adventure sports, Mont St Michel, sandy beaches, golf courses, childrens enchanted village and many cycling trails on disused railway lines, there are always plenty of activities to keep all ages out of mischief.
The picturesque village Lonlay L'abbaye is set in the valley with streams bubbling through and has, at its heart, the beautiful Abbey which still holds regular services. It has extensive grounds with an ancient but renovated cider press building.
Walk to the village and enjoy a quiet glass of wine outside the small hotel overlooking the village square and Abbey or wander down before breakfast to collect your bread and croissants from the patisserie. There is also an atm, charcuterie, boucherie, delicatessen, small supermarket, pharmacy, hairdresser and small restaurant. Or you can just relax on our deck and enjoy the views over the village.
Within just 10 mins drive, with its supermarkets, bars and restaurants, is the famous hilltop fortified town of Domfront. A walk up the main cobbled street will take you back in time with its ancient architecture and tiny shops.
A visit to the 12th century castle is a must with its far reaching views over the beautiful Normandy countryside. Visit the weekly Friday market and the biannual medieval festival with its period costumes and stalls.
The whole area is crisscrossed with walking and cycle trails and the weather is usually warm from May to Sept.

"Excellent for a base or to just to 'chill'."
Very good holiday accommodation with good cooking facilities, fridge freezers inadequate for our needs. The back garden area is great if you have a small dog, however there is a park, 5 minutes walk where you can exercise your dog. The village is quiet and quaint. Plenty of places to visit in the local area and if you don't mind 1 to 1.5 hours travelling there is much much more. Thoroughly enjoyed the stay.

"Beautiful location with everything you might need for a relaxing holiday"
Spacious accommodation for small or large groups with safe enclosed garden for children and pets that gets the sun all day. There is a road either side of the garden but it's very well enclosed so still private; the road isn't that busy anyway so it didn't bother us. Some of the cheapest fuel in the area at the adjacent self-service pumps! Great double height open plan kitchen and living area. Lovely little village with all the facilities you might need, including a vet; all only about 5 minutes' walk away. Well placed for visiting all the fantastic attractions the area has to offer; most within an hour or so's drive from the house; many much closer. Loads of activities for children, especially those from 4-5 and above; we'll be going back once our son is a little older as we only scratched the surface. If going in a large group be aware the twin bedded mezzanine is open to the main large living area so you may need to retreat to the other living space if children are sleeping there. This is not a criticism; just a tip!

"A great escape to the country"
Our dream French escape, surrounded by beautiful countryside. Lovely well equipped house with great space to accomodate our party of 9 (mix of teenagers, young kids and adults). Lonlay Village is so quaint, loved the Sunday Market, the Abbey and our daily walks to the bakers for our fresh baguettes and treats. The locals were friendly and if you really need to surf the web the little restaurant has Wifi access. Lots to do. We had a great week, well deserved break for a reasonable price.
