Location description from owner

The North Wales region

Cae Du Is In The Conwy valley, a green and wooded part of the Snowdonia National Park. Snowdonia is an area of outstanding natural beauty, with many mountains, notably Snowdon, the tallest. If you are feeling fit, there are many clear paths to the top which can be walked; alternatively, you can take the Snowdon mountain train from Llanberis up the 3560-foot summit. The area has a history of mining, particularly slate, and the chances are if you have a slate roof, the slate came from this area. You can visit some of these mines. Castles are plentiful, some in remarkable condition, all open to visitors. Some other places of interest are Portmeirion village (where "Prisoner" was filmed) and Conwy, a beautiful walled town with harbour. The victorian town of Llandudno, with its masive promenade, take lunch at Osborn house hotel, and cable car to the Great Orme with its dry ski slope and toboggan run. You can also find many stunning beaches some quite remote places.

Dolwyddelan

4 miles away is Betws Y Coed, the most popular village in North Wales. This is an old village with a good selection of shops and places to eat, a railway station all in a beautiful setting. You can buy supplies here. Dolwyddelan, about a mile away, is a small village with a pub and Spar store, as well as the remains of a castle. Nearby is the "Fairy Glen" and swallow falls both well known. Just beyond Dolwyddelan you can find the Ffestniog railway, a narrow gauge steam train which takes you through the mountains with fantastic views, you can stop and look around and catch the next train to continue your journey. More and more good food can be found nearby,

“Disappointing”

Reviewed 26 Nov 2016

There are both negatives and positives about this holiday letting. The location is amazing, set in beautiful grounds and very close to Betws y Coed. The house itself is very spacious with really good sized rooms. We expected a warm welcome but were disappointed to notice there was no heating on, starting our holiday in a cold cottage was pretty poor form. Overall the cleanliness of the cottage was good. Although the state of many of the furnishings let it down. The sofas, cushions and rug in the living room are dated and dirty in places. In addition, the rugs in the master bedroom seriously need replacing. Perfect location, beautiful grounds and a nice spacious house but it's in need of some updating.

Very disappointing for me to receive a poor review, a first in the 10 years or more since I have been doing this. I can only apologise for the heating not being on when you arrived, it is the intention to leave the heating switched on so the house is warm on your arrival, at this moment I am not sure why this did not happen, I will endeavour to make sure this is not the case in the future, to my knowledge the first time it has happened. Equally saddened that you were also dissapointed with some of the furnishings as we are continually replacing and updating these, the cushions were in fact only purchased this year, the master bedroom rugs are due for replacement over this winter. As ever your comments are helpful to us, and we do take them seriously, and always act upon them.

“Another wonderful week .....”

Reviewed 12 Apr 2015

This was our second time of staying at Cae Du and on both occasions we've had two wonderful weeks in beautiful surroundings. The house is welcoming, very clean and comfortable, well equipped with lovely furnishings. Our party included both pensioners and teenagers but the house is spacious enough to accommodate everyone without it being a problem and the dogs loved the freedom of the garden. On both occasions we have had mixed weather but it didn't matter, we were happy to spend time enjoying Cae Du, but there is so much to explore in the area both above and below ground there is always something to do regardless of the weather ! It ticks all our boxes and we hope to return again next year :) Thank you to Tim and Polly for sharing your amazing house and for helping to make it all so enjoyable.

Thank you fro visiting us again, we are delighted you have another enjoyable stay, thank you again for your kind comments.

“A perfect place in a stunning location.......”

Reviewed 4 Jan 2015

Our family of 12 and 2 dogs, Just stayed at Cae du for 1 week over the Xmas period and What an Amazing time we all had. We arrived Late on the 21st December so it was dark when we got there but from the moment we put the key into the door and walked in the hallway, we knew we had made a great choice. You could not fault Cae du, The house was spacious and clean and equipped with everything you could possibly need. There were plenty of books/dvds/cds and box games for everyone to enjoy. The piano kept the children entertained for hours on end. The next morning when we pulled back the curtains and looked out on to the views, it was absolutely mind blowing. We could not have wished for a better setting, the trees were different colours, like spring and there was a river running at the bottom of the garden. We all went on plenty of long walks along the river with the dogs which they loved so much. On Xmas day we happened to run out of eggs so took a trip down the road to the local Spar which happened to be closed, understandably. My brother popped into the pub opposite the Spar to ask if anyone knew anywhere open, The owner of the Spar happened to be in there and offered to open up his shop. How nice is that..... :) We had a perfect Christmas day, Our turkey and other meats we purchased from the butchers (AL & RO Jones) in Llanrwst which was 10 minutes away which was delicious. The living room was soo ideal for all of us to be seated around comfortably to watch the kids enjoying there presents. The surrounding areas of Cae du are so picturesque. Betws y coed is one of them which is 10 minutes from Cae du which is worth a visit. Some great shops there for picking up some nice gifts and also a few great places for afternoon tea. Unfortunately, our week was not the greatest weather wise. It did rain most days so we did not get out as much as we had planned. Fortunately enough though, Cae du was such a lovely comfortable home with enough space not to feel under each others feet, that it was a joy just having the time to relax, enjoy and spend quality time with those we love. Thanks to Tim & Polly for renting your lovely home to us and for being so helpful throughout the booking. You have been very accommodating throughout and because of that we as a family have had one of our best Xmas' ever. Happy 2015 to you both..........................

Polly and I are so pleased you found Cae Du to be the right place to stay over Christmas, only sorry you did not get any snow, which if not too much is a lot nicer than rain. Thank you for taking the time to write you kind review. A very Happy new Year to you and your family too

“A dream holiday house, garden and location”

Reviewed 1 Sep 2014

Cae du provided the most perfect base for exploring north wales. The house and garden is breathtakingly beautiful- something for every family member- extensive garden and river to explore, terrace and balconies to absorb the view and tranquility. The house is fully equipped for relaxing- comfy beds and two sitting rooms, kitchen and dining room for great family meals. It really has it all for a perfect large group holiday

Thank you for your kind words, we are delighted the house lived up to your expectations

“Wow!”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2014

We stayed at Cae Du from the 1st-8th August 2014, a mixed group of children and adults and we all loved every minute of our stay. The children were happy to spend days in the garden on the rope swing and swimming in the river, the whole garden was fantastic, not sure we even saw it all as we discovered more every day. The house is large, clean and well maintained with more than enough room for our party of 12 plus a baby. I can't recommend Cau Du highly enough, it's location is excellent with numerous activities in the surrounding area and only a ten minute drive from Betwys y Coed.

Thank you for your compliments, we are delighted you enjoyed your stay here

“Stunning house with everything you need to feel at home in a beautiful part of the country”

Reviewed 6 Feb 2012

Looking to get away with weekend of friends; some married with children, who came. The house itself is simply stunning, plenty of space in all rooms and communal areas (a well stocked kitchen that can accommodate everyone standing around and talking before you sit down at the dining room table that comfortable fitted 15 of us). It's all finished to a really high standard and frankly, I wished I lived there. There's no feeling of having to make do here with large bedrooms (the master bedroom having an amazing en-suite wet-room), plenty of bathrooms (jacuzzi bath!) and areas like a reading room if you fancied getting away from the group. The organisation of the stay was completely painless with everything we needed being fed to us and all questions being answered promptly and completely. There's a huge range of activities if you want to get out of the house with people mountain biking, hiking and and some taking a slower pace at Port Meirion, well worth a look. The house itself is on a large piece of land with plenty of room for the children to get fresh air; wooded areas, a stunning river and open spaces. Over all I'd have no problem recommending this as a place to stay for anyone or any age and the only regret is that we weren't there for longer.

Thank you for taking the time to let me know all went well, so pleased a good time was had by all, Many thanks.

“The house and surroundings had everything we needed for a luxurious and peaceful holiday.”

We had a wonderful time at Cae Du. The house itself is beautiful and very well equipt for a relaxing and comfortable stay. We were 2 families with 4 children between the ages of 6-11. The house and the grounds had something for everyone, each family had privacy due to lay out of the house and the communal areas are spacious and very homely. The views are incredible and the children loved exploring the grounds. All in all great fun.

Thank you so much for your kind and complimentary words about your stay, and taking the time to let me know, pleased you found plenty to do and made good use of the grounds/land
