The Powys region
Cartws y Parc is located on a small and select, family run caravan park and is surrounded by farmland. The park itself is enclosed by mature trees and looks out at the towering Moel Bentyrch and its nestling valleys. Facilities on site include a laundrette, telephone, fishing lake and a newly developed play area and games room. Football, bowling, swings, darts, pool and table tennis can all be played here as part of your family holidays in beautiful mid Wales.
The local pub is located 1 mile away in the little village of Pontrobert and you can also join two popular walks here - Ann Griffiths Walk and Glyndwr's Way (National Trail). The Tan House Inn is also 3 miles away and Meifod (5 miles) has a pub, rugby club and shop.
Llanfair Caereinion (6 miles) has all the necessary amenities including shops, pubs, banks and even a steam train. The busy market town of Welshpool (11 miles) offers many attractions including castles and a canal to take you back to a bygone era.
Take the short drive to the stunning lake Vyrnwy, where you can try your hand at watersports and cycling or enjoy a leisurely walk and good lunch. Golf and fishing are popular in this part of Wales, too, with plenty of golf courses and a coarse fishing lake.
If you're after castles and culture, Mid Wales has both in spades. Nearby Dolforwyn Castle, for example, was the last castle to be built by Llewelwyn (the Last Prince of Wales), between 1273 and 1277. Powis Castle, which started life as a medieval fortress, is a must, especially for its beautiful gardens and collection of paintings, sculpture, furniture and tapestries.
Portmeirion and the Mountains of Snowdonia offer great days out whilst pony trekking and quad trekking are available locally. Other popular attractions include Llanrhaeadr Waterfall (the tallest in the UK), the Centre for Alternative Technology and King Arthur's Labyrinth.
Ann Griffiths Walk - 7 mile route following the river Vrynwy. Full of contrasting Powys landscapes, incuding views of the Berwyn mountains. 0.5 miles from cottage.
Glyndwr's Way is a long distance footpath in Mid Wales that was granted National Trail status in the year 2000. Join 0.5 miles from cottage.
Severn Way – Gentle 12 mile route along the Montgomery Canal towpath from Welshpool (11 miles) to Newtown.
Offa's Dyke Path – National Trail (177 miles in total) following the Welsh/English border. Nearest section starts at Buttington Bridge, 13 miles away.
Fishing lake on site stocked with carp, roach, rudd and tench.
River Banwy – Llanfair Caereinion. ½ a mile of fishing down stream from town bridge. 6 miles
