Location description from owner

The England region

The South Downs National Park (SDNP) runs from Winchester to Eastbourne, along a narrow strip of the southerly counties of Sussex and Hampshire. Ditchling, Lewes, Glyndebourne, and many other wonderful areas of East Sussex are in the National Park. The countryside here has a gently rolling look, characterised by flintstone and chalk, claytiled cottages, small hedge-lined fields and ancient oaks, hornbeams, and sycamores. Many of the areas, particularly around Ditchling, Offham, Barcombe, Hamsey and Lewes, have managed to keep their traditional agricultural and artisanal character, and to maintain the vernacular nature of the buildings - brick and flint cottages, tile-hung farmhouses, and lichen-clad flintstone walls. Sunshine and shadows, rain and mist playing across this landscape makes it a wonderful place to be.at any time of year.

Ditchling

Our area is dominated by the curving geology of the scarp side of the South Downs. This is exactly where Raymond Briggs imagined his 'Snowman' flights, and where Roland Emmett created and built (in the old forge next to our cottage) his flying car Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Take a walk up the Downs at any time of year and you'll see why they were inspired! Below the Downs, the landscape is small-scale agricultural, dotted with deciduous woodlands and, in Spring, wild-garlic banked streams. Horses and riding are very popular - hence be prepared to drive very slowly down the narrow, high-hedged lanes! The South Downs are strewn with wildflowers in spring and early summer (this is one of the most bio-diverse areas in Europe) and you can spot many types of birds too - kestrels, lapwings, even buzzards - if you have sharp eyes. The area is certainly not short of interesting things to do and to visit - too many to list here. Wonderful walks and cycles, National Trust properties, the much-feted Ditchling Museum, rummaging through shops in the mediaeval streets of Lewes, taking a pottery or sculpture class at the nearby Skelton workshops, riding on the Downs, a night out in Brighton, going to the races at Plumpton, searching out local produce at farm shops, hang-gliding (if that's your thing!), visiting Bloomsbury group haunts such as Monk's House and Charleston Farmhouse...not to mention the many Brighton Festival events all around this part of Sussex in May/June.

“Cosy, scenic cottage - just what we were looking for”

Reviewed 12 May 2014

Had a really great time staying here; the owners kept up a good dialogue with us and the place was just as described. Nothing really that bears complaining about, and cottage itself was completely idyllic - would absolutely love to stay there again next summer!

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review, and very pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Do let us know if we can be of help again this year or in the future. Best wishes. Eve

“Slept like a log”

Reviewed 12 May 2014

We loved it here. It's a special house in a special place. Very comfortable and well-equipped. You sleep like a log, it's so peaceful. Loads to do by foot, bike, or car.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are very glad that you enjoyed being here, and found it so peaceful. Another recent guest also said 'The peace is addictive' ! Just let us know if we can be of help in future. Eve
