The East Lothian region
East Lothian is located in the South East of Scotland, neighbouring the capital city of Edinburgh. The award winning coastline stretches along the southern edge of the Firth of Forth to the boundaries of the Scottish Borders. East Lothian is often referred to as Edinburgh's playground due to its close proximity to the city. The county covers approximately 257 square miles, allowing easy access to all of the local attractions.
With over 40 miles of magnificent coastline, golden beaches, rolling countryside, spectacular cliffs, award-winning tourist attractions and the world’s finest selection of links golf courses, East Lothian combines the best of Scotland in miniature! It may feel like a million miles away, but it’s only minutes from Edinburgh by car, train or bus!
East Lothian is a great place to visit if you like the outdoors. With miles of beautiful coastline, providing a playground for water sports activities from surfing in Dunbar to sailing in North Berwick. The coast is also the route for the John Muir Way, a long distance walk taking in the full cost of East Lothian from Musselburgh to Dunbar. The Lammermuirs to the south provide walkers and wildlife spotters with wide-open spaces where you might wander all day long without meeting another soul! With rolling countryside and a stunning coast, East Lothian has much to offer the outdoor enthusiast.
You are sure to find something unique when you shop in East Lothian. Our villages and towns are well served with names you will recognise but we also have excellent independent retailers offering exclusive merchandise. Many of our shops sell high quality locally crafted and sourced products. Whether you want to treat yourself, take home a souvenir or buy something for family and friends you are sure to find just the right thing.
East Lothian is known as the Garden of Scotland. There is a superb range of fresh local produce available throughout the year. Whether you’re a foodie or just enjoy good food and drink you’ll be spoilt for choice in East Lothian. On the last Saturday of each month you can come and taste and buy local produce at Haddington Farmer’s Market. A range of first class cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels all prepare the finest food using the best of local ingredients.
Our part of East Lothian is famous for its golf and is home to more first class courses along this short stretch of course than you can shake a stick at. Top of the list must be Muirfield itself, with Luffness, Dirleton, Gullane, Archerfield, North Berwick and Dunbar close behind.
Within walking distance (10-15 mins) of Yellowcraig Loft is the Castle Inn Hotel and Restaurant, Dirleton Gallery (which has a daytime cafe), the Open Arms Hotel and the village store.Gullane has its own beach (ours is called Yellowcraig) and a good range of local shops, bars/restaurants.
Dirleton is most famous for its Castle which was one of the first castles to be built around 1100, introduced by incoming feudal lords from Normandy, Brittany and Flanders. The de Vaux family, who came from Normandy in the 12th century settled first in a manor house at Elbottle (close to our villa in Archerfield) and then early in the next century relocated to Dirleton village where John de Vaux built the yellow sandstone Castle. During the civil war in the 1640s, Dirleton Castle was occupied by Moss Troopers but in November 1650 they were forced to surrender to Oliver Cromwell's army under the command of General Monk who bombarded the ramparts into the ruin you can see today.
There is the Scottish Seabird Centre only 2 miles drive to North Berwick where you can charter a boat or enjoy a trip out to one of the Islands of the coastline.

"The perfect house, perfect location, perfect host!"
We stayed at yellowcraigs for weekend in september to celebrate Granny's 92nd birthday. our party was made up of 12 people ageing from 9 months to 92 and everyone was well catered for. The weekend could not have been better. The house is of excellent standard and very homely. Great location with plenty to do within easy walk or drive. Eric prepared us a super meal which meant we could relax and enjoy our Saturday night. We hope to return! If you are in any doubt about booking this house- do it! You will not be disappointed.

"Brilliant party house"
Stayed at Yellowcraig House for a weekend hen party and the house delivered in every way, from plush but un-stuffy décor and rooms, to spacious back garden with BBQ and comfy furniture, to a big social kitchen that became the indoor hub of our socialising. Eric was so helpful in the lead up to and during our stay, too. You need to spoil yourself and organise a stay at this house - it's a treat.

"Fantastic accommodation & weekend had by all."
I stayed at Yellowcraig House in May for the weekend with family, all ladies. Some were celebrating special birthdays, so we decided to go away for 2 nights all together, there were 14 of us. We could not have picked a better house or location. Everything is just perfect, from the very comfortable and very well equipped house to the location, near the beach and North Berwick. The garden is very spacious and well equipped too. A very warm welcome when we arrived and nothing was any trouble to them. Very helpful. A big thank you to Eric & Heather who cooked, served and cleared away a delightful 4 course dinner on the Saturday night. At the end of the weekend it was a thought to go home, everyone had a lovely time. I would recommend this house if you have a big party all looking to go somewhere very special. Thank you once again and we hope to be back.

"Fantastic weekend had by all!"
Myself and a group of friends had the pleasure of staying at Yellowcraig House for my sister's hen weekend. We were made to feel very welcome on arrival by the owner Eric who showed us around the gorgeous house. There were 11 in the group in total and we had plenty of space. All of the rooms within the house were faultless and luxurious. My sister had a fantastic weekend also and we will be considering staying here for future special occasions. Fantastic weekend had by all, couldn't have asked for more!!! Thanks again Eric and Heather.

"the perfect location for our team"
I used this for a team meeting and we started off with dinner beautifully cooked and served by Heather. The house is so well equipped, so it had everything we needed, and Heather was on hand to help us out. We didn't get to explore the outside, but hope we will get the chance to do this on another visit.

"Stunning House for Hen Weekend Away"
I booked Yellowcraig's House for my friend's Hen weeked for 17 ladies! We had a fabulous time. The house was stunning and a home from home. All of the furnishings, decor and kitchen equipment are very good quality. The owners Eric and Heather were very friendly and helpful. They organised a mini bus for us, let us use their barbeque and accomodated us by adding in two extra single beds to the house. There were nice touches like leaving glasses out ready for us to pour out the champagne. We had a slight issue with the ipod speakers as it froze, but luckily it was easily sorted! We also neded more chairs for the garden, which the owners brought us. Near the beach and North Berwick. Would recommend. Thanks.
