Location description from owner

The Brittany region

Dinard is situated on the mouth of the River Rance. It is the jewel of Brittany, often referred to as the "Cannes of the North" with beautiful, clean safe beaches, restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets, a Casino and Marina. From its shores you can take a boat rides to St Malo, Dinan, the island of Czembre (the last place of German occupation in France) or even out to the Channel islands.
St Malo, a ten minute boat ride across the Rance, is an ancient walled city, teaming with life, shops, bars and restaurants. Largely built by the wealth of the Corsairs, the "gentleman pirates" who plundered the merchant ships of the English and the Spanish in the English Channel, this is an enchanting place. The views from the walls along the Brittany coastline are fantastic and at low tide you can walk out to Le grand B, the island where Chateaubriand, the french writer is buried.Other places of interest include the Labyrinthe du Corsaire, a magnificent maze; the Musee du Histoire de la Ville and an Aquarium.
St Servan, just the other side of the Rance barrage is a lovely small town with lots of small restaurants and bars along the front. High above the town, but easily accessible, are the remains of the German bunker, occupied during World War 2. Tours take place most afternoons and are well worth it! I real step back into a terrible part of this regions history.
Further down the Rance is Brittany’s best preserved medieval city of Dinan. A leisurely 3 hour boat ride, 30 minute bus ride (from just outside the Tourist office) or 20 minute car drive away, Dinan is full of old world charm with picturesque 15th and 16th century half-timbered houses, complete with pointed gables and wooden porches line the cobbled streets. There is a 14th century castle and ramparts completely circling the town which houses a museum offering a fascinating insight into some of this local history.
Just an hours car journey east of Dinard is the world famous Mont St Michel. This Gothic style Benedictine Abbey is one of the most popular visitor attractions in France. Built originally, so legend has it, on the instructions of the Archangel Michel, it dates back to 708 and is featured in the Bayeux Tapestry. It is an impressive sight, rising up in the midst of immense sandbanks and accessible only over a causeway.
A hour in the other direction brings you to another impressive fotress, Fort du latte. Central to the history of the area, this impressive fort was involved over the centuries in many skirmishes with the English. It last saw real action in 1815 during the Hundred Years war but more recently was the set for the 1958 film The Vikings with Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis. Many of the citizens of Dinard were extras and dressed up as Vikings! It is in good condition and well worth a visit. A trip to Fort du latte can be linked to a good walk and a visit to Cap Fahel, located just 4km along a spectacular coastal path. Cap Fahel offers amazing views across to Pointe de Groin in the East and Ile de Brehar in the West, 70 foot cliffs and close encounters with many sea birds.
Concale, just 20 minutes drive from Dinard is famous for oysters. The oyster beds are visible at the low tide and cover many hundred hectares. The town itself offers fantastic sea food restaurants at very reasonable prices.
Around the same distance away at Pleugueneuc is the fantastic La Bourbansais Park and castle. Housing a zoo with many endangered species, there are also daily displays by Birds of Prey, including a Golden Eagle and demonstrations by French hounds.
The Dinard Tourist Office, situated in the centre of the town has all the information you need on all the attractions in the area.

Dinard

Dinard has four beaches, the largest of which is Plage de l’Ecluses which is full of activity through out the summer, including holding national volleyball tournaments. The beaches are all cleaned daily and have life guards on duty between 10.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. and 3.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. For the little ones there are children’s clubs offering trampolines, organised games and table tennis and, for bigger ones and water sport lovers, wind surfing and sailing tuition is available as long as you book early!
Around the beach area there is an indoor and outdoor pool and the house that is reputed to have inspired Hitchcock to write his Psycho movie – there is even a statute of him on the front and a film festival here in early October to celebrate his work!
There are some fantastic coastal walks. An eight kilometre coastal walk meanders around the rocks which links the beaches of Le Pleuriere, St Enogat and St Lunaire. The Chemin de Ronde, starting just beyond Le Pleuriere takes you around the headland and offers some of the finest views across to Dinard and St Servan.
There is a very pleasant park area behind Le Pleuriere beach where there is a small collection of animals including chickens, donkeys, llama, rabbits and horses.
Boats regularly sail from Dinard over to St Malo, down the river to Dinan and even into the Channel to Chausey.
There is horse riding based in the town at an Equestrian Centre which holds National and International events, one of the largest of which takes place over three days at the beginning of August. Horse riding is available.
There are three golf courses nearby, one of which is the excellent St Briac links course and many others, including the championship Val Andre course along the brittany coast. There is also a tennis club where courts can be hired.
Dinard market, which takes place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays draws traders and visitors from far afield. It is busy and vibrant with street entertainment and a bustling atmosphere - a Bretton specialitity, a sausage wrapped in a pancake can be bought from many of the hot food stalls and is delicious with a cold glass of cider!
In the evenings there are many excellent restaurants and lively bars including the casino with its high quality, but good value restaurant overlooking the bay. There is a cinema.
Firework displays take place on the beach to celebrate Bastille Day (14th July) and on or around 15th August (depending on the tide) to commemorate the liberation of Dinard by the Americans at the end of the Second World War.
