The Sofia Region

Borovets, the oldest and most famous Bulgarian mountain resort, is situated on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountain at an altitude of 1350 meters. The resort enjoys a breathtaking location huddled amongst age-old pine woods right at the foot of Mount Moussala (2925 m), the highest peak on the Balkans. Only 72 km away from Sofia and just 126 km away from Plovdiv, Borovets is easily accessible at all times of year.
Established at the end of the 19th century as a hunting place for the Bulgarian kings, Borovets has developed into a modern year round resort.

Winter in Borovets

In winter 45 km of pistes and 20 km of cross county trails weave their way through the stunning scenery of the Rila mountains. Skiing and snowboarding is available for all levels and the added feature of several floodlit pistes allows late night fun on the snow.

The real charm of Borovets can be felt during the winter. Mountain lovers from all over Europe converge on the resort to partake in skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, ski jumps and biathlon, ski-doo, ice-skating and night-skiing.

And when the sun has gone down, the resort begins to pulse with the numerous lights of the restaurants, bars and nightlife that make Borovets such a fun place.

Summer in Borovets

In the summer Borovets is just as marvelous offering clean and fresh air, serene centuries-old pine forests, green meadows sprinkled with fragrant flowers and herbs, blue lakes and majestic snow-capped peaks. It is great for mountain walking, hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. Borovets is the starting point for various hiking routes throughout the Rila mountains varying in distance from several hours to several days.

For golf lovers you will find the highly regarded Ihtiman golf course within 20 minutes drive.

The beautiful and impressive Lake Iskar is also in near proximity with good boating & fishing facilities.

Slightly further afield is the Rila Monastery (about 90 minutes), Bulgaria’s largest and most famous monastery, founded in 927 AD and hidden high in the Rila mountains. Or if you fancy a day of luxury in a natural spa resort then visit the town of Sapareva Banya, host to Europe’s hottest mineral water and the only active geyser in the Balkans.
