Barlings Barn nestles in a glorious and blissfully quiet, south-facing position, looking down a valley in the beautiful Mid Wales hills. We just fell in love when we found Barlings as a ruin 33 years ago. It needed lots of TLC but we've showered it with that over the years and have hosted so many wonderful celebrations here: 21st, 30th, 40, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th, even 90th birthdays!!, Golden/Silver weddings,Hen/Stag weekends, Christmases (and not just in December!) college and school reunions or just friends and family who want to holiday and spend time together with their loved ones away from the busy-ness of the world outside.

Fantastic activities available locally; salmon/trout/sea fishing, golf, horse-riding, badger and bird watching (red kite country), fabulous unspoilt and uncrowded sandy beaches, sailing, mountain climbing, quad biking, clay pigeon shooting, breath-taking walks, mountain biking around the lakes, Centre Alternative Technology, white water rafting, plus the glorious Welsh history/arts/crafts and culture in this beautiful land of song.

The 'Bear Grylls Survival Academy' is approximately an hour and a quarter away by car from Barlings Barn in Criccieth. They are now offering Survival Half Day courses which sound great fun and just the thing for our more adventurous Barlings guests

The Powys region

'Mid Wales is breathtakingly lovely!!!!!'

'God smiled the day he created Mid Wales!'

These are just two of our guests many comments and having lived here for 32 years the owners we have to wholeheartedly agree!!

This really is a lovely area, and although blissfully quiet there are lots of places to explore and many activities available locally; riding, walking, fishing, clay pigeon shooting, quad bikes, bird and badger watching, sailing, mountain biking around the lakes, golf, great beaches, Cader Idris, and places of natural beauty and historic interest to visit. Plus, of course, the superb facilities we offer at Barlings Barn! You might also care to visit and which offer further useful information about the area

Llanbrynmair (English translation is St. Mary's church on the Hill) is a tiny village with the friendly community dotted around the surrounding hills, in Powys, Mid Wales on the A470 road between Caersws and Machynlleth. 11th C church still proudly stands at a short distance on the hill in Llan.

Llanbrynmair has a very welcoming pub (very good selection of beers), village shop (free range eggs, etc., orders taken that can be delivered to the door), 'Machinations' (fascinating collection of automata, coffee shop and rabbit kingdom. Also the home of internationally renowned artist Terence Lambert.

Local attractions include arts and crafts in the village with the world famous Centre for Alternative Technology a short drive away. At various times throughout the year there are great cultura events; The Royal Welsh show in July, stunning choral recitals, Eisteddfodau, village shows, sheepdog trials and the annual international Gregynog Music festival.

There is the Award Winning Montys Brewery in Montgomery. This is a sweet little market town a short drive away - you can arrange tours of the brewery and they deliver kegs of their brew to Barlings Barn if you ask. All our guests who've tried it have commented 'wish we'd ordered more!. Also worth visiting is Montgomery Castle - with fantastic views over the plains into Shropshire. Lovely tea shop in the village square is perfectly positioned for a refreshing cuppa!

There are fabulous walks to the source of River Severn high in the Hafren Forest, in the hills at the end of our valley. This is a wonderful area for pottering and exploring the small local towns of Llanidloes - - museum of local history and industry, ancient market hall, where John Wesley preached. Then there's historic Machynlleth - visit Owain Glydwr's breakaway parliament building, craft shops and local silver smith, scrummy organic whole-food cafe , amazing lantern and artistic fireworks display late in year. Y Tabernacle for concerts and exhibitions. 'Machfest' Machynlleth's comedy Festival attracts some big names - this year taking place between 2nd and 4th May.

There are stunning Autumn colours in the ancient oak, birch and beech forests in this area which rival New England to my mind. Glacial lakes and gorges, 3,000 year-old standing stones, castles of Kings and Marcher Lords and the Roman influence plus the connections to King Arthur add to the wonderful atmosphere.

Barlings Barn is located along the honeysuckle strewn lanes, two miles from Llanbrynmair viilage and ony 35 minutes by car from the golden sand-dunes and huge beach at Aberdovey with tiny fishing harbour (Aberdovey crab is scrummy) award winning restaurants, pubs and a scattering of fascinating shops.

Village shop 2km. Why slog around the shops and drag all your shopping with you? Place an order in advance for Jason who delivers to the door delicious fresh fruit, veg, milk, local ham, bacon twice a week - very good prices and quality.

Also ASDA and Tesco both deliver to your door to make life easier for you. Everything can be waiting for you on your arrival if you like.

Montys' Brewery will deliver different sized kegs of locally brewed real ale - very popular with our guests

There are excellent and unusual shops in the area. Machynlleth and Llanidloes are both very organic and have many local crafts people and artists displaying and selling their beautiful work.

Very good selection of pubs, bars and restaurants in the area. Please ask for details

Nearest restaurant, pub/bar - Village pub 3km. Alleppo Merchant pub in Carno very good for meals, oak beams and open fires. Fabulous Sunday Roast 10km

Caterers can be arranged who come to serve you up scrumption food without leaving Barlings!
