Situated on the south-west side of Bulgaria at the foot hills of the Pirin range, this beautiful alpine region offers history, superb scenery and its own ancient town. Providing excellent winter sports facilities for both novice and expert, and summer activities such as golf, walking/hiking, horse riding, mountain biking and fishing.
The Pirin has the best and the most modern ski centre of all Bulgarian ski resorts. Bansko is Bulgaria's number 1 ski resort and has the best snow record and the longest ski season (15 Dec - 15 May) of all Bulgarian ski resorts.
South of Bansko is the Pirin National Park, which is listed in the UN list of National Parks and Reservations. The park covers over 27,400 ha and is famous for its lakes, waterfalls, caves, century-old trees and historic sites.
It is not only the favourable conditions for ski and snowboarding that bring people here – Bansko attracts many people with its architectural and historical value. Bansko was declared a unique settlement of international cultural tourism in 1979.
The newest and without doubt, the best Bulgarian winter resort, Bansko provides an interesting combination between the Pirin Mountains and the ambience of the ancient Bulgarian old town.
The town itself is mesmerising and charming. With small back streets hosting cosy fire lit mehana's to delight you with their local delicacies, home cooked food and live traditional music to the street cafe's, shops and architecture.
Bansko hosts an annual beer festival and jazz festival which is extremely popular amongst Bulgarians and foreigners alike. For those who enjoy a stroll around a large Sunday market, Bansko does not disappoint. The town also has an outdoor Ice Rink to enjoy.
Not far away is the famous Rila Monastery which is a must to see.
Founded in the 10th century, the Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments. It is on account of this also a key tourist attraction in Bulgaria and South-eastern Europe as a whole.
The town itself attracts visitors through its 120 cultural monuments, museums, old traditional houses, and the Bansko school of ethnographic and icon painting, which has permanent exhibitions.
Bansko is famous as a ski resort, but is also ideal for other holidays. In the area it is possible to fish, mountain bike, rock climb, pony trek and walk in beautiful alpine meadows.
