The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

Head down to south-west France for an active, yet chilled family holiday

If you love France and you love the seaside, yet cringe at the thought of the crowds along the Cote D'Azure, you'll love the south-west coast of the Aquitaine region.

Mile upon mile of golden sands, backed by magestic sand dunes (many are protected, so don't take your tobaggan and sledge down them as I heard someone did) and towering pine forests give this area a wild, windswept beauty, unmarred by beach bars, kaftan sellers or sun loungers for hire (take an umbrella - the breeze may be cool, but the sun is fierce and there is no shade).

We were in Landes, an area which extends over the two departments of Gironde and Landes and is almost entirely covered by an immense pine forest. This totally artificial 19th-century forest was created in order to make use of an area of sand and marshes and now the pine groves and undergrowth preserve a delicate ecological balance.

All along this magnificent coast you'll find campsites nestling among the forests, some of them just a few minutes stroll from the beaches.

The family destination

Between the centre of Biscarrosse Plage (Beach) and the beach itself is a distance of only 200 yards (200 metres), all of which is a pedestrianised area. Add to that the supervized bathing areas and here you have an environment where all the family can benefit from a holiday in full safety.

As for activities, they include beach clubs for children with all kinds of games and activities. And that is not all: riding schools, inflattable castles and adventure playgrounds mean that children can have fun and play with new friends throughout their holiday.

Towards the shopping corner, you can enjoy the excitement of one hundred shops, including toy shops for children and boutiques packed with gifts like an Aladdin's Cave. Check out the sparkling balloons and magical kites!

Before you go home, you must sample the culinary delights of Place Dufau, where you can taste French delicacies that are especially enjoyed by children as well as adults. Ask for waffles, traditional sandwiches ("pan bagna"), donuts and candies and see the smiles on your child's face.
