The Abruzzo region

Sulmona Sulmona has many interesting buildings and has museums within the walls, there is also a theatre and picture hall, at certain times there is concerts on in the square, the information centre will be able help you with events and dates.Markets are held in Garibaldi Square on Saturday and Wednesday. You can take the bus up to Pacentro is also a lovely medieval village and worth a visit with a few restaurants on the way there, also a Michelin Star restaurant there which we have heard ix excellent and very reasonable (should book in advance).Restaurants (Italians eat late after 8 pm) Sulmona has lots of restaurants and café bars we do not know the names of them but can give you an indication of where they are:Cantina de Biffa has just changed hands do not know if it is good.Turning left out of the house go past cantina de biffe across Corso Ovidio walk up this street you will see 2 restaurants the one furthest away is very good. At the small water fountain beside the aqua duct turn left up this street there is an excellent restaurantGoing into Garibaldi square on the left is another excellent restaurant .Another restaurant which we enjoy which is only open at lunch time is beside the big church going along by the aqua duct pass the paper stand it is 1st right you will see the church restaurant on left. There is another restaurant just before the above restaurant on the rightSwimming Pools (We are not sure what months they are opened)There is a country club in the Europa hotel which is only 5 minutes' drive from the house (summer only)To get there come out the fire station car park and turn left up the hill over the bridge by the Coop on the right keep going until you will see a sign for Pescara and industrial zone take the road on the right keep going until the crossroad until you see the hotel. There is also a water park on the road to Corfinio follow the road sign (green) Autostrada going to the road toll, go by the road toll entrance for about 500 metres and the water park is on the right. (Summer only)The municipal swimming pool is on the way to Pacentro near the Manhattan hotel. (It would be better to ask the Sulmona information centre for directions.) All swimming pools require the wearing of swimming caps. SUPERMARKETTHERE IS A SMALL SUPERMARKET THE SELLS MOST THINGS IF YOU GO OUT THE HOUSE TURN RIGHT ALONG VIA CORFINO UNTILL YOU SEE A ONE WAY SIGN POINTING RIGHT IF YOU GO LEFT ON THE OPPOSITE STREET THE SUPERMARKET IN ON THE LEFT IT IS OPEN IN THE MORNING UNTIL ONE AND REOPENS AT 4.30

Ski-ingThe region has 21 ski areas with 368 km. of runs. Located in the highest region of the Apennines, these ski areas are at heights nearly comparable to many Alpine resorts. Because of their proximity to the Adriatic and winter precipitation patterns, they often have more snow than the Alps. Abruzzo also is popular for cross country skiing, especially on the high plain of the Gran Sasso as well as the Majella. Lift passes tend to be cheaper than the Alps. One day at Rocarasso currently costs 34 euros. Rocarasso is only a thirty five minutes drive from Sulmona and is suitable for beginners and the more experience skiers.Coast/BeachThe beaches along the Adriatic Coast 45 minutes away by car are all blue-flagged and among the cleanest, most family-friendly in Italy, safe, clean and mostly sandy beaches protected by breakwaters, with sun loungers and umbrellas for hire, cafes and bars. Elsewhere are plenty of quiet coves and bays with warm, shallow waters..
