Lucca is situated on the river Serchio. It was founded by the Etruscans and became a Roman colony in 180 BC. The original rectangular grid, based on the Roma street plant, can still be seen: piazza San Michele is the cardo and via Santa Croce is the decumano. In 56 BC Lucca hosted the First Triumvirate between Julius Caesar, Pompeo and Crasso. The city became prosperous in the 11th century with the silk trade. Starting from 1160 and for almost 500 years Lucca was an independent republic. In 1805 it was conquered by Napoleone who appointed his sister, Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi as Queen of Etruria. In 1815 Lucca became part of the Bourbon-Parma duchy and in 1847 lost his independence until the formation of the Italian State in 1861.
