The Villa Xini is a delighttful first class villa built in the traditional Gozitan style in the tranquil village of XEWKIJA, a 25 minute walk from the pebbly beach of Mgarr ix-Xini and the dramatic cliffs of Ta' Cenc. You enter from a narrow alley into the Villa Xini's private courtyard with a hanging bougainvillea. The villa itself has a spacious open-plan lounge/diner, beautifully furnished with a rattan sofa and chairs, and a superb oak kitchen with verde granite worktops.
The huge verandah which opens off the dining area has a great view over the swimming pool (8 x 5m) and beyond to the surrounding private garden with almond, carob and fig trees, fennel, bay, olive and prickly pears. There is cable TV, Wifi, pay phone, washing machine, frost free refrigerator and a wood-burning fireplace.
A built-in-barbecue is near the swimming pool. There are two bedrooms both with A/C on the ground-floor. One has a double bed, and the other has three single beds and an ensuite shower room.. There is also a separate bathroom with bidet and Ideal Standard sanitary ware & fittings.
A traditional stone staircase leads from the living area up to an airy landing with a double bed and opens onto a very large roof terrace with great views of the Rotunda church of St John the Baptist and beyond. It can sleep 7 persons comfortably.
A short walk from the villa leads down the steep steep valley of Mgarr ix-Xini, which finally opens out to an inlet and the open sea. The valley itself looks as if it has been cut into the land by an invisible hand. At various places over looking the valley, trough-like depressions are carved in solid ground, rectangular and square. A report in 1946 described them as troughs of unkown antiquity.
Bicycle/jeep/car hire is recommended. Transfer to and from the accommodation can be arranged, regardless of your arrival time. You will be greeted at the airport and transferred straight to Villa Xini.

Xewkija is famous for its contemporary parish church to St. John the Baptist, known simply as 'the Rotunda'. Not only does it dominate the village, it dominates the entire island. the village with its population fewer than 3,000 has an eccentrically suburban air for an agricultural community. Men on ancient lilac-colored vespas roar noisily through the streets wearing soup-bowl helmets and shot guns slung across their backs; young boys goad a donkey and cart through the main square; a handful of people too old to work the fields sit beside their bamboo-slatted front doors awaiting the cool of the day, while tourists gawp at their cathedral-size church.
The village sprawls along and of the main Victoria-Mgarr road, and is well signposted. On the 4th Sunday in June Xewkija celebrates its festa to St. John the Baptist, patron of the knights of Malta.
From Xewkija it is 2km to the pebbly beach at Mgarr ix-Xini (meaning 'the galley's landing place). Fork left exactly 1km out of Xewkija - the road is not for the drunk or fainthearted. The swimming in the small fjord at the bottom of teh steep single track is clean and suitable for children. Gozo's south coast has the same topography as Dingli cliffs: the waters are dark, deep and clear against the sheer cliff face, offering good diving and snorkelling.
