Torretta is a small town of Palermo, near the Mount Canalicchi, 313 meters above the sea level, easily accessible by a network of roads connecting the village with Palermo, Capaci, Carini and Montelepre. Founded in 1599, Torretta was first a barony and then a fief, belonging to the noblest families of Sicily as Grifeo, Traina, and finally, for four centuries, Tomasi di Lampedusa (from which descended Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, author of the famous Italian novel “Il Gattopardo”), who here owned one of their summer residences.
The local economy is based mainly on livestock farming (mainly cattle) and agriculture, characterized by the cultivation of citrus and olive trees spread on the territory of the country. From these olive trees, we produce a very tasty extra virgin oil using the local oil mills. More interesting are also: the woodworking and the production of furniture of exquisite workmanship, the presence of some restaurants and bakeries where you can taste bread produced following the old traditional methods.
As in all small towns of Sicily, also in Torretta is still possible to appreciate the genuine products of agriculture and livestock local and taste the typical products of Sicilian cuisine such as cookies, cakes, breads baked in wood-fired ovens, caponata, cheese and extra virgin olive oil produced locally. In the restaurants located in the village and surrounding areas you can also taste the typical Sicilian dishes at good prices. Don't miss every year, the two local culinary events:
The famous “Festival of Vastedda”, organized on every 8th December during the feast of the Immaculate Conception, where you can taste local products and the Vastedda, loaf of bread with extra virgin olive oil, salt, pepper, cheese and cottage cheese, accompanied by a good sip of wine;
The “Festival of Setti Pitanzi“ organized on every 19th March, during the Feast of St. Joseph. During the event are distributed local products, sandwiches with sausage, cheese, wine, cakes with cottage cheese (typical sweet) and a plate of “Virgineddi” (fresh pasta cooked with vegetables and greens). All these are enjoyed by traditional and contemporary music.
The territory of Torretta borders inward with the town of Carini and towards the sea with the town of Capaci. Both neighboring towns are rich in history and tourist attractions.
Carini, about 4 km from Torretta, is the largest town in the area, where there is the famous Castle of Carini's Baroness, recently restored and open to the public. The Castle was built between the late eleventh and early twelfth century, over an earlier building certainly Arabic, created by the first Norman feudal lord Rodolfo Bonello. The recent excavations carried out walls of earlier ages than Norman. Today it is possible to visit the Castle paying a ticket of only 3 euro.
Capaci and Isola delle Femmine,about 6 km from Torretta, are the main coastal towns in the area and due to their beaches, pubs on the promenade, the crystal clear sea, attract thousands of tourists every year. The beach extends for about 1 km and is characterized by some sections free and some lidos. From Isola delle Femmine beginsthe Marine Reserve of Capo Gallo, which can be visited both by land and sea routes (for scuba divers). Besides the sea, the area is also famous for its good fish and for the fish market that takes place every morning in the small port of Isola delle Femmine.
