The Blagoevgrad Province region
Many ski experts call Bansko Bulgaria's number one ski resort, probably because it has the finest and most up-to-the-minute ski centre and the most luxurious hotels compared to the other resorts. Bansko differs from the other resorts in that it was not a purpose-built ski resort and offers more of a town atmosphere. It too is seeing its fair share of multi-million Euro investment with the creation of several new ski areas, which will expand the overall area substantially. Out of all of the Bulgarian resorts, Bansko has the best snow record and consequently the longest ski season, which runs from 15th December through 'til 15th May and with the addition of 161 powerful snow cannons, the quality and guarantee of snow makes the resort even more attractive.
The picturesque town of Bansko lies on the boundaries of three of Bulgaria's most important mountain ranges - Rila, Pirin and Rhodope. This idyllic location endows the area with amazing panoramas of towering snow capped peaks and lush green pine forests. Visitors are enchanted by the town's captivating mix of history, tradition and culture. The old revival houses each have their own unique colourful history. Bansko's exact location is in the north eastern foothills of the Pirin Mountain range close to the River Glazane, a tributary of the Mesta River. Its altitude is 925 m above sea level with its ski area lying as high as 2,000 to 2,600 m. The area is easily accessible from Sofia - the nearest international airport, which lies 160 km away. The town displays a quaint old world charm with many traditional buildings blending in with the luxury of the new. In fact there are over 100 historical monuments as well as many workshops manned by crafts people using traditional production methods. Out of town there is plenty to keep the sightseer occupied with the Pirin National Park, Rila Monastery and the Staroto Gradishte ancient fortresses all within easy reach.
The town offers much in the way of entertainment with plenty of traditional Bulgarian taverns known as Mehanas. These enchanting restaurants provide a strong local atmosphere as well as a wide selection of traditional Bulgarian food and wine. Many of them stage live folk music and dancing. In addition to the Mehanas there are lots of local cafes, bars and night clubs, which tend to stay open all night long.
Whilst there is an abundance of accommodation including five star hotels, self catering apartments and small guest houses it is essential that you plan and book your accommodation before you visit as the resort is full to capacity during the ski season.
The Pirin Mountains are alpine in character with the highest peak, Vihren reaching 2,914 m. Bansko's highest ski piste lies 2,600 m above the sea level and is ideal for international competitions, which are becoming more and more popular here. During the coming season the resort will offer a total of 70 km of ski piste. The resort offers some fantastic facilities and challenges for extreme winter sports including snowboarding and biathlon, slalom and cross country. There are also plenty of gentle facilities for beginners and intermediate skiers as well as children.
If a hard days skiing is not enough to wear you out, or you simply want a new experience, Bansko offers the best facilities for night skiing with 7 km of lighted piste between the town and Banderishka Polyana. Night skiing officially commences from 18.30 until 21.30.
For those who love to indulge in such tests of strength and nerve, there is a fun park dedicated to snowboarding. The Balkans Fun Park is full of artificial bumps and jumps, but you can also build your own here. Many snowboarders also hang out at the half -pipe showing off their latest tricks and stunts. Those looking to learn or perfect their ski techniques may want to ski schools run by internationally renowned skiers, Alberto Tomba and Mark Girardelli.
The Chaloin Valog area is a great base for children and beginners, but not exclusively and has experienced much investment of late; the lower slopes have been renovated and two of the slopes have been equipped with snow canons capable of making high volumes of good quality artificial snow. There is also a new four seater chair lift with a capacity to transport 2,000 people an hour. There is also a new, gentle drag lift here to transport beginners and children to one of the new pistes and facilities for night skiing have also been added.
Bansko's emergency ski patrol works 24 hours a day and there is good quality first aid available on all slopes. Bansko also has an excellent well equipped hospital, which is open 24 hours a day and has specialist doctors who are experts in ski injuries.
