Villa Orchidee is a spacious perigordine farmhouse that still retains its original features of ochre coloured stone walls and wooden oak beams. It has 6 ensuite bedrooms suitable for 3-4 families to share with a 7th bedroom (not ensuite) that can be made available on request for a small supplement. It is one of our 3 Holiday homes at Le Four a Sel, a riverside property located just 2km from Montignac and 25 minutes from the popular medieval town of Sarlat. Shops are a mere 5 minutes drive, and many more sites and attractions are just 30 minutes away . Set in private grounds of 15 acres in a peaceful rural location, it offers stunning views of open countryside, lots of space and onsite facilities to amuse all ages. The area around the gites , pool and garden is fenced to keep the children safe .You can walk to a bar/restaurant where you can also buy fresh baked baguettes and croissants. Le Four a Sel was chosen by the Irish Times,Gloss magazine as its travel pick in October 2013.

Accommodation comprises:

• Two Double bedrooms(each with a double bed)

• Two Triple Bedrooms (with a double bed and a single bed)

• Family room consisting of 2 rooms that interconnec. The first room has a double bed and it interconnects to a 2nd bedroom with 3 single beds,perfect for families with very young children. All rooms above are ensuite.

A 7th bedroom with a double bed, no private bathroom( can be made available for a small supplement)

• Dining area/Lounge is very spacious . Two rooms have their own private entrance leading onto the courtyard. TV with english satellite channels in the lounge.

This is an ideal place for a family holiday with many Cycling and walking routes close to the property and nearby . The facilities onsite include:

Available all year, all bedrooms have wall mounted electric heaters and there is a woodburner stove in the lounge for the cooler months.

If this house is not unavailable, the alternative would be to rent our 2 other houses on the property (together they can sleep 13) which are beside each other on the garden side of the property. These are : Villa Hibiscus(property ref. 100337on this site ) is a 4 bedroom house ,sleeps 8 and Villa Mimosa ,our 2 bedroom cottage which can sleep 2-5 guests. The 3 houses can be rented individually or altogether as one unit to accommodate up to 30, ideal for large gatherings such as reunions, a birthday celebration or school groups or hen parties! A cleaner and babysitting service can also be arranged if booked in advance..

Le Four a Sel is in the village of Aubas , 2km outside Montignac & the prehistoric Lascaux caves which contains 1500 polychrome paintings by prehistoric man on the ceilings and walls . Located in the Vezere valley, a Unesco world heritage site. Set in 15 acres of private grounds, the riverside setting is peaceful and stunning: poplar trees a hundred feet high line the riverbank and lush cornfields provide magnificent views from the bedroom window Private Fishing from dawn to dusk is available on half a kilometer of our river frontage . Fruit trees in the orchard provide shade as well as fruits that guests can help themselves to when in season (cherry,pears,plums,walnuts, apples,hazelnuts,chestnuts). There are many areas for al fresco dining: the garden outside your gite, benches and tables near the pool and by the riverside and in the orchard. .Just a 10 minute walk from the property is Chateau Sauveboef, which has the largest private collection of fossils in France and within a 15 minute drive are 2 other beautiful chateaux:. You can take a circular walk from our property up to a viewpoint (45 minutes) and see a breathtaking panoramic view of the 3 chateaux .Private Fishing from dawn to dusk is available on half a kilometer of our river frontage .We are in the Perigord Noir, (also known as the Dordogne) a region of a 1001 castles, magnificent gardens, and France's most beautiful villages. This is an ideal base to explore the Dordogne where you can take gentle walks or cycle through the countryside, sample the region's gastronomic delights like truffles, foie gras,walnut oil, or discover history in any of the numerous chateaux and prehistoric sites many of which are just 30 minutes way. Fruit trees in the orchard provide shade as well as fruits that guests can help themselves to when in season(cherry,pears,plums,walnuts, apples,hazelnuts,chestnuts). For golf lovers, two 18 hole golf courses are just a 40 minute drive . Loads of parking available, enough to accommodate camper vans and /or trailers. We also provide renting facilities on-site for you to leave your trailer so you can travel to other parts of the region.

We are flexible on rental dates outside of the high season(July August) and can negotiate rates for dates and occupancy to suit your needs.July/August changeover day is on Saturday.Smoking inside the house is prohibited but is permitted outside( in the covered terrace). The rate is for 15 people. If the 7th bedroom is used, there is a small supplement(please enquire for details) Short breaks(4 days) or long lets at special rates. Special rates if the house is occupied by 10 people or less during certain periods. Please do not hesitate to enquire if you have specific requirements.

The Dordogne region

The Dordogne region provides an incredible spectrum of interesting sites and activities, from castles that rival the Loire( In fact , the Dordogne has 1001 castles), magnificent gardens,like the Hanging Gardens of Marquessac, which stands 130 meters above the river, picture postcard villages like Sarlat , which is one of the best well preserved medieval towns of the region.just 25 minutes away, with golden-ochre stone houses and flower-festooned squares. Along the way ,the scenery is breathtaking. .

When it comes to prehistory,it is in a league of its own .It houses the most magnificent vestiges of the Palaeolithic era in Europe the most famous being Lascaux in Montignac is just 15 minutes away. This is France's most important prehistoric cave.

The Aquitaine contains 13 of the " Most beautiful villages in France", 8 of these are in the Dordogne. Beynac is one of them,location setting for films like Chocolat and Joan of Arc.

For wine lovers, Bergerac and Cahors is a close by. The whole area is known for the richness and quality of its food .There are many excellent restaurants, several with Michelin stars, where the foie gras, truffles, cabecou goats cheese and other delicacies can be enjoyed.Bordeaux and St. Emillion are an hour and a half away, and can be done as aday trip.

April is already warm here . In Spring,(May, June) and Autumn(September,October) the countryside is more lush and the scenery even more beautiful, since the daylight is slightly less harsh than in the summer, a perfect time for walking and cycling in the Dordogne. Temperatures in autumn and spring are 21-26 degrees, with clear blue skies from dawn to dusk.

Summer is typically hot: 30-36 degrees with lots of activities around-food markets,and local art and music festivals with great atmosphere,giving you lots of opportunity to try the local perigordian cuisine and experience French rural life.


We are in Aubas, 2km from Montignac , a charming town with beautiful stone and timbered houses and lovely cafes and restaurants by the riverand site of the famous Lascaux caves .It has a lively market on Wednesdays.

The Montignac international festival in July is a week-long event that culminates in a wonderful fireworks display by the river.Street performers and bands are everywhere ,creating a wonderful festive ambience.The area around us offers a multitude of fascinating activities and sites no more than an hour's drive: troglodyte shelters, stalactite &stalagmite caves to fascinate children of all ages, stunning gardens, fairy tale castles, fortified towns built on cliffs with magnificent views of the valley,postcard scenery.

There is so much to see and do suitable for adults and children of all ages: Canoeing down the Dordogne, horse-riding, hot air ballooning, falconry displays, a corn maze,introductory workshops for wall paintings. There is an aquarium parc just 35 minutes away, with special events like dive feeding of sturgeon and carp and a diver show.Also nearby is the National Prehistory museum ,fascinating for the children

Sarlat, a medieval town is just half an hour away and has a huge Saturday market not to be missed. During the summer you will find many street performers and musicians entertaining in its square and cobbled alleys. Great atmosphere in the evenings. For wine lovers, Bergerac and Cahors are not far away (1.5 hrs) while Bordeaux, for beaches and more vineyards, is a 2 hour drive and can be done as a day trip.

There are many interesting festivals from June - September: Hat festival, Mime festival, scarecrow festival, Jazz Festival - as well as day and night markets to sample the local delicacies, cheese and wine. You will find that the 2 weeks is simply not enough to explore and enjoy this region.
