Lake Orta is known as one of the most picturesque lakes in the north of Italy, as it is not over commercialized and very unique. The area, thanks to the quiet beauty of the landscape, its fascinating history and its wealth of artistic treasures - principally Romanesque and Baroque architecture offers a perfect getaway for a wide spectrum of people. Whether it is a lakeside holiday, a walking holiday or days sightseeing in many of the historic locations, Lake Orta offers all of this and more.
If one wishes to visit the other lakes in the area then Lake Orta is a perfect position to start the day. Lake Como is just one hours drive away, Lake Maggiore is only 30 minutes away and Lake Mergozzo is 20 minutes from Orta.
In the immediate vicinity of Orta San Giulio there are the 21 chapels at the Sacred Mount, which is just a 10 minute walk from the Piazza Motta in the centre of Orta. This is a sanctuary which is dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi and was built in the 16th century. One can admire the panoramic views of the entire lake and enjoy the surroundings of the natural park.
The island of Saint Giulio is another very important historical place to visit and one can arrive there by taking a 5 minute boat ride from the main square. The island dates back to the 4th century and offers a truly magical experience. If one has a car then it is possible to drive just a short distance to the Mottarone mountain. Mottarone is surrounded by the pre-alps and on a clear day one can see 7 lakes from the top. From Mottarone mountain, via a different route one can visit Lake Maggiore and the Borromeo islands. Orta San Giulio is a paradise that must by seen.!
