Why visit Gortin? It's an outdoor wonderland, with stunning landscape, friendly people and a little bit of charm that is still to be found in the western part of Ulster. The Sperrins provide superb walking, cycling and exploring for all the family, while village life can be bustling with great places to eat and lively pubs for a social able drink.
Walking - Gortin Glens is situated 3 miles from the town which offers way marked trails suitable for toddlers and push chairs. For the hikers in the family why not take on the Cairn summit, past the Gortin lakes and take in the amazing views from the highest point.
Cycling -Mountain bike trails wind down the hill side, with 3 trails varying from basic to experience standard in the Gortin Glens forest Park. Road cyclists can explore the 'Gold Cycle Route' covering 50km, 5 Sperrins cycle ways are signposted and the National cycleway NCN 92 and 95 pass by the door. All these are scenic route cover the beautiful valleys and the ascending heights of the Sperrins hills, and luckily, most routes follow contours of the hills, making them families friendly. Bicycles can be hired from Gortin Activity Centre.
Activities - Adjacent to the chalet is the Owenkillew Activity Centre which offers archery, canoeing, climbing wall and team building experiences for small and large groups. The community centre has an excellent playpark for the little ones and lots of space to kick a ball or throw a frisbee.
Canoeing – The Gortin lakes are the perfect spot to arise your interest in canoeing, while the more experienced canoeist can get their trills on the excellent grade 2 Owenkillew river with a grade 3 rapid at the gorge.
Horse riding – Mount up into your saddle and head for the hills, horses riding for all levels is offered at local equestrian centres.
Fishing – Pass a day sitting on the banks of the river Salmon & trout fishing on the Owenkillew, Glenelly and Mourne rivers, fishing permit can be sourced locally. Seasons opens April 1st to October 20th. Fishing in lock ash and Merlough are rainbow trout fishing, permits source from the Department of Agriculture.
Golf – A morning on the green is easily accessible with Newtownsteward, Omagh, Sion Mills, Strabane Golf clubs all within 15 miles of the centre.
