Set within over 3 acres of delightful parkland, a particular feature of the gites, & with a 10x5 metre pool, this is an location for your carefree and relaxing stay in France.The sympathetic conversion has character & charm, retaining many original features and has created a superb, generously proportioned and well equipped gite. It is an place ideal for families to relax.Surrounded by fields of sunflowers and wheat, interspersed with woodland, the area is ideal for cycling and walking, yet within walking distance of the village of Sauze Vaussais, with all facilities. A ferme auberge serving excellent locally produced food is a short distance from the gite. At the heart of the Poitou-Charentes, L'Hirondelle is very well situated, being just 5 miles from the N10, midway between Poitiers & Angouleme, & well served by airports at Poitiers, La Rochelle, Limoges & Nantes. Close to several of the regions Top 10 tourist attractions, & the Atlantic coast within easy reach, it provides the ideal base for exploring this lovely part of France. L'Hirondelle, entered through impressive glazed French doors to an atrium, boasts original oak timbers & a minstrels gallery with seating, overlooking views to front & rear.The spacious open plan lounge, complete with CD based hi-fi system, has an airy feel & along with the kitchen & dining area comfortably seats up to 8 people.The well-fitted fully tiled kitchen is equipped with a 4-burner gas cooker, washing machine, microwave, large fridge/freezer & matching crockery & cutlery. The spacious master bedroom on the first floor has a king size upholstered bed, & full suite of matching cream furniture. Also on the first floor is a charming twin-bedded room with oak furniture typical of the region. The modern, fully tiled bathroom comprises shower, wc, mirrored vanity basin & heated towel rail. There is a twin-bedded room on the ground floor, with French door to the courtyard. NB - If required, a 4th en-suite ground floor double bedroom with wet room style bathroom may be available.

You enter your gite through french doors into an atrium, rising full height to the minstrel's gallery. The open plan lounge, with comfortable seating & complete with CD based hi fi system, has a light, airy feel. Along with the kitchen and dining area, the gite seats 8 people in comfort. The kitchen is equipped with washing machine, fridge freezer, microwave and gas cooker, & extremely generous storage space. All matching crockery/utensils are provided. The gallery affords an additional seating area with views to the front and rear of the property.There is an impressive French king size double bedroom with traditional upholstered bed and matching furniture. One of the twin bedrooms has oak furniture typical of the area, with prettily co-ordinated furnishings. The second twin room is on the ground floor and has a French door leading onto the courtyard patio. It has 2 comfortable divan beds, a pine wardrobe & bedside table. The fully tiled bathroom comprises shower, vanity basin and wc, together with heated towel rail.NB - Wifi access available on site. - An additional en-suite ground floor double bedroom may be available with this property making it suitable for up to 8 persons, & wheelchair friendly. L'Hirondelle has a private garden, barbecue, table and chairs and a courtyard patio also with table and chairs. The 10 x 5 metre, fully terraced pool is securely fenced, with a self-locking gate to comply with current French safety standards. Sun loungers, table, chairs & parasol are provided on the generous sun-bathing terrace. Within our 3 acre park, there are a wide range of plants and a number of magnificent trees, several of which pre-date the house. Wildlife abounds in the area, you will certainly see birds of prey, rabbits, game birds and red squirrels. You may be fortunate enough to see badgers, foxes and deer. There is no shortage of space for the children to run about & play, and there is a covered games area adjacent to the pool with table tennis & table football. Swings, badminton, volley ball net, trampoline, boules and other games are available on site ,as well as a range of toddler toys. Adult bicycles are available to hire.

The Poitou-Charentes region

In the Poitou-Charentes, with its wonderful warm and sunny micro climate, (second only to Provence), sunflower fields & vineyards, L'Hirondelle is located at the geographic centre of the region and is ideally placed for visiting the many family attractions, historical buildings and Chateaux throughout the region. It isan area of varied landscapes, Romanesque architecture and quaint villages, many of which nestle at the side of the beautiful Charente River. Famous for its cognac, pineau, seafood and goats cheeses (a signposted car goats' cheese trail makes a good day out), the area is a gastronomic delight.There are a great many tourist attractions in the Poitou-Charentes. Attracting a great many visitors, the Vallee des Singes is perhaps the most popular, appealing to all ages & only 12 miles from the gite. There, you can spend the day viewing a large number of primates in natural surroundings. Futuroscope is a very popular theme park, and it is always advisable to plan to stay and watch the evening spectacular.The Atlantic beaches are within easy reach, some suitable for surfing & watersports, & with Chatelaillon & Fouras always popular. The delightful Ile de Re with its beaches, harbours, excellent seafood restaurants, and quaint streets can be explored via the road bridge or if you prefer why not visit Oleron by ferry? The historic town of nearby Melle provide the opportunity to marvel at some amazing Romanesque architecture in the 3 magnificent churches. Home of the Frankish Kings, you may also choose to tour the silver mines, or perhaps take the arboretum walk.Zoodyssee, situated in the Chize forest, features European animals, or you may prefer to visit the donkey sanctuary at Dampierre and view the original Baudet Donkeys.There is a large leisure lake at Lambon where you can try a variety of water sports - The Marais Poitevin, or Venise Vert, is an excellent day out where you can hire one of the flat-bottomed boats and enjoy the maze of waterways. It is a marshland area of great beauty. Alternately, you may prefer to hire a bike or even explore the peaceful countryside on foot. Cognac is another favourite, with really excellent tours of the famous brand distilleries such as Martell, Remy Martin,Courvoisier & Hennessy which, situated on the banks of the Charente, starts its tour with a boat trip across the river to the opposite bank and your tour of the "chais". There are various other locations for canoeing, kayaking and dinghy sailing on sheltered lakes and along the River Charente, and a variety of zoos, leisure parks, water parks and other attractions to entertain the whole family. Medieval towns like Chauvigny & Confolens, (both with velo rails) Montmorillon, ( where you wii see how the bookmaking art was established and flourished), St.Jean d'Angely with cobbled streets and gothic towers, Saintes on the Charente river with an impressive Roman gateway & amphitheatre, and fine towns like Rochefort and the walled cathedral cities of Angouleme or Poitiers are just some of the many historical places of interest to visit for the day or simply to shop and take a leisurely lunch.


In Deux Sevres, closely bordering the departments of Charentes and Vienne, Sauze Vaussais is a village within easy reach of the N10. Markets are held twice weekly and the village is well provided with a range of shops and services including a large supermarket with petrol station & car-wash, two boulangeries, surgery & pharmacies, a small hotel, tea room, bars and restaurant. There is an outdoor pool, tennis courts and plan d' eau - a small fishing lake & picnic area, with snack bar, mini-golf, children's play area and walks. Riding stables are just a few miles away.An excellent local ferme auberge serving farm-reared meat & locally produced food is within walking distance of the gite. Close at hand are the towns of Civray and Ruffec, both on the river Charente, and ideal picnic spots. You can hire kayaks at the Aire de Rejallant in Ruffec. The silver mines at Melle and the Chateau of Javarzay & its attractive lake at Chef Boutonne, are just a short drive away.There are many interesting markets in the area, although one favoured by the locals is held at Lezay every Tuesday.Golfers have a choice of good courses within the region, and the nearby Charente river, delightful for picnics and bathing, provides excellent kayakking for the more adventurous.During the summer, there is always something to enjoy in the region. The Melle festival 's street theatre, with singers,dancers acrobats, story-tellers etc provides daily attractions, along with evening concerts. There are a number of large music events in the summer months such as the ones at Cognac & Confolens. In September the annual Vintage Car rally takes to the ramparts in Angouleme & draws the crowds, and there are always farmers' markets, fairs and brocantes/vide-greniers at local towns throughout the year.
