The Dordogne region

The South West of France is one of the most beautiful regions, and enjoys milder weather due to the Gulf Stream. The summers are long, and the winter is usually very mild indeed, but we cannot guarantee it!

Le Manoir is in the heart of the wine growing region, with vineyards next to many of the roads in the area.

A local cycle hire company will deliver bikes to the door.

There are several excellent golf courses within easy driving distance. Ask us for your free Dordogne Golf Pass, allowing you to play at 7 courses, including Chateau de Vigiers, at reduced cost.

From Le Manoir, one can see the ruins of the Chateau de Gurson, steeped in history, with donkeys keeping watch.

No visit would be complete without a trip to St Emilion, Bordeaux or Bergerac.

Domaine de Coquelicot, an organic wine producer gives free wine tasting, as does Chateau de Gurson, both within walking distance . Chateau la Plante also gives a free tour and wine tasting, 10 minutes away by car. An experience not to be missed.

Lac du Gurson (3 minutes) - a very large open-air swimming lake, sandy beach, fountain, adventure playground and free pedaloes, restaurants and cafés.

Tennis at Lac de Gurson or St Martin de Gurson.

Villefranche de Lonchat (5 minutes), our nearest town, once a fortified English stronghold (Bastide). There is a handful of small shops, cash machine, and a weekly market in the town square. The baker will deliver fresh bread each morning, if requested: a lovely way to start the day! The Fête Cantonale, a great day out for all ages, will be held on Sunday 24th July 2016; a treat not to be missed.

Montpon-Ménestérol (15 minutes): canoe/kayak centre, beach and bars, banks, petrol station, shops, supermarket, cinema.

Castillon la Bataille (20 minutes) - weekly colourful market on Mondays, right on the Dordogne river. Re-enactment of The 100 Years' War July/August. Also banks, fuel, supermarkets and shops.

St Emilion (30 minutes) - one of the most important wine areas in France. There you will find the largest monolithic chuch in Europe, and the view from the top of the tower is well worth climbing the 196 steps!

Lac Jamaye (40 minutes), with free boating.

Aqua Park near Bergerac, 40 minutes, excellent for Young children, with water slides and fountains. There's a mini-golf, and a bowling alley there, too.

Bergerac - a lovely old town, always well worth a visit. Find the statues of Cyrano de Bergerac!

Bordeaux (1 hour)- a beautiful, very old city, with magnificent buildings. Always plenty to do and explore.

Dune de Pyla (95 minutes) - largest sand dune in Europe. Climb the stairs for a splendid view (at 108 metres above sea level) of the ocean and surrounding area. Option to go back down on the sand - a unique experience.

Sarlat la Canéda (90 minutes) - east of Bergerac. Famous for its night markets. Also in this area are the prehistoric caves of Lascaux and Chateau Castelnaud (with demonstrations of a working trebuchet).

Why not book a hot air balloon trip? The nearest place is an hour away, at Le Fouilloux. It is a great way to see Le Manoir and the beautiful scenery of the area from a different perspective .

There are also Châteaux, Gardens, grottoes and tourist areas, weekly markets, night markets, music and events in the area.

For those who just want to sit back and do little there are plenty of good walks, cycling, bird-watching, botany, star gazing (spot the shooting stars and satellites), photography, painting, reading and lazing by the pool - all at Le Manoir.
