The area of Piedmont is well known for its culture and excellent cuisine. The large cities of Milan and Turin are very easily accessible by train or car. They are renowned for fashion and innovation as well as the many exhibitions which are held throughout the year. The local vinyards are just 40 minutes away, where one can experience an unforgettable day out.
The climate is generally good throughout the spring and summer with temperatures rising to 35°C (100°F) in the month of July and August. There are local festivals during the month of August in most of the villages surrounding Orta, where one can enjoy local folklore, food and a good night out.
In the immediate vicinity of Orta San Giulio there are the 21 chapels at the Sacred Mount, which is just a 10 minute walk from the Piazza Motta in the centre of Orta. This is a sanctuary which is dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi and was built in the 16th century. One can admire the panoramic views of the entire lake and enjoy the surroundings of the natural park.
The island of Saint Giulio is another very important historical place to visit and one can arrive there by taking a 5 minute boat ride from the main square.The island dates back to the 4th century and offers a truly magical experience. If one has a car then it is possible to drive just a short distance to the Mottarone mountain. Mottarone is surrounded by the pre-alps and on a clear day one can see 7 lakes from the top. From Mottarone mountain, via a different route one can visit Lake Maggiore and the Borromeo islands. Orta San Giulio is a paradise that must by seen.!
