And 'realistically difficult to find a place as small as Elba, that has a historical and cultural heritage of great wealth.
A story that begins with the Argonauts and Porto Argo (as it was known Portoferraio in mythological legends) continues with the Etruscans, who first exploited the rich deposits of iron, then give way to the Romans.
Next was the Medici, who built massive fortifications on the island to protect the bloody assaults of the terrible pirates Saracens up to the Napoleonic period, where despite his brief exile, the French emperor left the island a ' indelible imprint of his genius.
All this is still partly alive in this extraordinary piece of land in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Marciana

Until the '50s 1 centers on the west coast of the island were not served by roads, but only by footpaths suitable for wagons or mule: Marciana Marina has therefore close to ancient times a strong bond with the sea. Sailors and mariners commanders have beaten the world's oceans aboard sailing ships and steamships: in distant countries, particularly Argentina and Venezuela, many families reside locally sourced.
Fishing in the trap of the 'Bathroom' formed until a few decades ago, a traditional activity. 1 tuna, forced into a complex system of fixed networks, they were finally caught in the bloody "slaughter" and then processed Enfola.
Marciana Marina boasts a Circolo Nautico for efficiency and competence on par with the most renowned Italian associations: every year, in addition to educational activities and services for the well-equipped tourist port, are organized regattas and events of international importance.
Fresh because of the north and never crowded, the beaches of the town of Marciana Marina are characterized particularly by the water clean. The steep cliffs and dense vegetation impose a very nice walk to get to the dramatic cliffs of the Cove and the Cove, to the west of the country. Behind the houses we find the beaches 'towns' of Fenicetta, Phoenicia (behind the Tower of Pisa) and the port, much frequented by the residents. Along the coast that goes towards Procchio (where beautiful villas overlooking the sea surrounded by oak forest) will open the clear coves among the rocks of the spreader, Schioppo, the bathroom, the Sprizze and, in view of the islet Pauline of Redinoce, the only reachable by car. The other you get off the main road with short paths.
Tradition and culture
Marciana Marina has managed to retain the flavor of ancient traditions, as evidenced by events such as the patronal feast of St. Clare (to whom the church is dedicated), which takes place in mid-August and, involving the whole country, culminating in a spectacular procession of lighted boats in the waters of the harbor. The link with a past in which centuries of history and popular culture have woven the fabric of society and urban sturdy and supportive, it's easy to feel walking on the promenade lined with tamarisk trees, or in the narrow streets that lead nell'intemo, between the 'closed', the precious little jealously plots of land enclosed by strong walls and cultivated with care.
No less than the old farming traditions is the influence of Marciana Marina has exercised the sea. The abundance of prey and the protected harbor have always favored the practice of fishing: in times of plenty of oily fish, went as far as to the beautiful bay Marinese even boats ponzesi and Sicily.
The premises were devoted mainly to the coastal fishing using boats built in the shipyards of the country: the robust 'scìapichelli', with 6-8 sailors on board, they were used to drop into the harbor, long nets, which were then retrieved from the ground with the help of family and friends, among whom was divided their catch.
The mariners, always skilled navigators and sailors on cargo vessels trading with the mainland, towards the end of the 800 began to attend schools and academies nautical. Captains and admirals famous bear family names, and home is not difficult to find traces of travel to distant lands: the services Tearoom Chinese porcelain on display in the salons to unusual frescoes depicting exotic landscapes on the walls of the rooms.
About painting, is to remember the stays of Llewelyn Lloyd, the great landscape that during the first years of '900 immortalized splendid views of the island. The school of painters includes mariners still valid exponents and the country has a characteristic square dedicated to the artists on the waterfront, home, during the summer, in numerous exhibitions. Walking through the narrow alleys of the old, then, it is not uncommon to come across discrete and showcases displaying immaculate craftsmanship of great value, objects of art, antiques and fashion clothing.
