The Ionian Islands region

The Ionian islands are located off the West coast of Greece. They enjoy the typical Mediterranean climate of warm, sunny summers and mild winters. Being islnads, sea breezes always moderate the afternoon summer heat.

As everywhere in Greece, the people are hospitable and welcoming. Ask the locals for info and they are only too happy to offer hospitality and to share in the local culture and festivities.

Kefalonia, recently made better known by Louis de Berniere's 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' is the largest of the Ionian islands (1118 sqkm). It has been described a an island of 'rugged beauty and unadulterated light' (The Times, 14.03.98) and landscape ranges from coniferous forest on the mountainous areas to typical Mediterranean olive and citrus trees in the valleys. Large parts of the island are still completely unspoilt with people living in the traditional way but there are now ample facilities for leisure and entertainment. These features make Kefalonia an ideal location, not only for the traditional summer beach holiday but year round for people with an interest in walking, cycling, photography, painting and those who just want to relax in beautiful surroundings and enjoy a slower pace of life.
