The Salzkammergut is a well known area in Austria for its historic importance in the production of Salt, but it is also synonymous with being the Lake District of Austria, where some 76 lakes are surrounded by mountains and magnificent scenery. Despite being in the mountains of the Alps, cycling and walking can still be a family activity here as paths around the lakes provide an easy but beautiful route. There are of course much more challenging routes and many in between, all of which provide yet another stunning vista and sense of well being. In addition, there are many unique activities to be found such as the ice caves near to Krippenstein, lime stone caves near Ebensee, salt mines in the UNESCO world heritage site of Hallstatt, and many other attractions around the area such as the ceramic town of Gmunden, and the thermal spa of Bad Ischl.Of course with all the mountains there are some fantastic ski resorts and opportunities to head into the hills ski touring during the winter. We are located in a prime position to take advantage of this with 5 ski resorts being within striking distance. Our nearest mountain, the Feuerkogel, is a 5 minute drive away, whilst Dachstein West, Krippenstein, and the Kasberg are all 45 minutes in the car. The Postalm is just under an hour in the car but is well worth a visit especially if you are a beginner.
Please note we are not in Bad Ischl but a 15 minute drive away in a town called Ebensee which in itself has much to offer being situated to several lakes which are also no more than a 15 minute drive away. Lake Traunsee (deepest in Austria) is nearest to us and is just a short cycle ride away, Offensee (a popular spot for a swim in Summer), and the two Langbathsee lakes all of which make for a delightful day out to visit as do the nearby villages of Traunkirchen and ceramics town of Gmunden. During Summer, Traunsee is alive with lake activities such as sailing, diving, kite surfing, canoeing and the like. For a more relaxed outing onto the lake there are some nice boat rides available, via renting your own row or electric powered boat, or sailing out on a boat trip taking in the stunning sights of the Traunstein and surrounding scenery, and to make the trip even more special there is an option to take it on a lovingly restored and romantic paddle steam boat - the Gisella. There are many reasons why the Traunsee area is known as a hiking, cycling and water paradise during the Summer, but it is also fantastic in Winter. The Feuerkogel ski resort is just a 5 minute drive away and Dachstein West is just 45 minutes in the car. Ski touring and cross country skiing is also another fantastic option around the Langbathsee lakes.
