Located in the heart of Italy, Tuscany is surely one of the most famous Italian landscapes. The essence of this beautiful region are its natural, artistic, and cultural heritage.
Tuscany is divided into ten provinces, whose capitals are Arezzo, Florence, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena. Florence is the capital city of the region itself. The region was populated first by the Etruscans on the 7th century BC, and about 500 years later by the Romans. If you are keen on history, art and nature… well you're definitely in the right place! ;-)
Indeed the fathers of Italian painting, architecture and sculpture (such as Cimabue, Giotto, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo) lived in beautiful Tuscan towns. This is the reason why the entire region is rich in museums where thousands of amazing works of art are kept. You'll be impressed by the majesty of the many ancient monasteries, villas and palaces (for example “Palazzo Vecchio”, “Palazzo Pitti”, “Palazzo Medici”), that are found all over the Tuscany region.
Any time is a good time to visit Tuscany, but in Spring and Autumn the climate is mild. Bus services and trains connect the larger towns, but having a car would be an advantage and you would be able to more easily enjoy the small towns and vineyards, which represent some of Tuscany's strong points.
Tuscan cuisine is rich in vegetable dishes, tasty soups, meats flavoured with sage, rosemary, and thyme.
We're sure your mouth is already watering!
A holiday in Tuscany is an experience that will give you happy memories for the rest of your life.
Cortona is a hilltop town of ancient Etruscan origin was born in the 8th century BC, and later fell to Roman hands. Cortona is situated between Arezzo and Perugia, in a traditional center for artistic production.
A museum of Etruscan Art and tombs are a remarkable testimony of the local history and the Renaissance period with the architecture of the palaces and paintings in Churches and museums when the Medici owned Cortona are a visual trace of the elegant past of Cortona.
One of the main features of walled Cortona are its winding and enchanting streets and cobbled lanes and the views of Val di Chiana and even Lake Trasimeno and is one of the locations where scenes for Under the Tuscan Sun were shot.
Cortona offers open-air operas in the Summer, classical concerts in churches and in the local theatre , jazz-festivals , wine and food tasting , medieval plays and lots of pizzerias and restaurants with terraces offer Tuscan specialties. Like other medieval towns in Tuscany , roads tend to be steep and some are closed to traffic, so walking is the best way to discover the hidden gems of Cortona.
For those keen on walking, cycling or mountain biking, the area is ideal.
Montepulciano and Chianti, both famous for their wines and cheeses are only one to two hours away on lovely country-roads.
A wide choice of Tuscan cuisine specialities are offered by the local restaurants and tavernas and can also be savoured during the various country celebrations in the nearby villages. Dishes are prepared with extra virgin olive oil grown and produced locally. Many of the wines are produced on the local farms.
