The house is situated on the slopes of the Cimini mountains, with truly breathtaking views in all directions of rolling countryside and then mountains, 5 minutes from the beautiful medieval town of Soriano. It sits surrounded by it's large garden, olive groves, and nut orchard in a quiet rural location, with masses of space for kids to roam safely to their hearts content. It is 20 mins from the medieval papal city of Viterbo, 30 mins from scenic Orvieto with its spectacular cathedral, 40 mins from the beautiful Lake of Bolsena, 1 hour from the Lazio/Tuscan seaside and an hour north of Rome. It is situated in beautiful countryside, very similar to neighbouring Umbria and Tuscany but far less touristy. Florence (90mins by rail) and Sienna are a 2 hour drive.

Soriano itself is a very friendly local market town with a wonderful historic medieval citadel and castle, all the necessary amenities and some excellent and reasonably priced restaurants. Lots of good eating in surrounding towns. Rome is easily accessible by car or train (35mins from Orte). The area is known for its many thermal springs. Nearby are the Lakes di Vico and Bolsena, and chestnut forests on the Monte Cimini.
Proprietors speak English, French, Italian, and some German.

Local agent Floriana speaks fluent English. She is a local tour guide and can arrange tours for our guests around the medieval heart of Soriano and many other local sites. Her mother provides excellent traditional pasta making lessons - great fun for adults and children alike. She is a mine of information for local travel and activities/sites to visit.

Soriano-Chestnut Festival(Sagra di Castagne): This takes place in the first two weeks of October, which often sport excellent weather. There are medieval pageants and contests between the quartiere/rione of the town most nights in the main square in Soriano (See photo).

The whole community get together to perform, provide typical local food (eaten together in great cellars and halls), joust, and run Soriano's own palio (horse race). This is the best time to get a real feel for the local life and community - a really heartwarming experience - and free chestnuts! This period tends to get booked early.

The Lazio region

We are on the borders of Northern Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany.

Soriano is a lovely town with spectacular views and a medieval citadel. Very friendly local people. There is a Jazz festival in the summer and a famous chestnut festival (really a medieval pageant) in the first 2 weeks of October.

The Cimini mountains are a beautiful area of forest around the crater of an extinct volcano in which sits the Lago di Vico. La Fagetta is at the summit and has wonderful views, walks on nature paths and an excellent restaurant!

Nearby is the medieval papal city of Viterbo with it's many festivals and thermal hot springs. Also the Lago di Bolsena is 35 mins away - excellent views, beaches boating and restaurants! Rome is an hours drive away or less by rail - arguably the most fabulous and interesting city in the world. Just over an hours drive to Tivoli - Hadrian's Palace - a huge area of Roman ruins - fascinating.

We are 40 mins from the famous Cathedral city of Orvieto.

The coast is less than hours drive away at Tarquinia or San'Agostino - 1 and a half hours to the Tuscan coast, 2 hours to either Florence or Sienna.
