The Sicily region

Palermo is Sicily's cultural, economic and tourist capital. It is a city rich in history, culture, art, music and food. Numerous tourists are attracted to the city for its good Mediterranean weather, its renowned gastronomy and restaurants, its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque churches, palaces and buildings, and its nightlife and music. Palermo is the main Sicilian industrial and commercial center: the main industrial sectors include tourism, services, commerce and agriculture. Palermo currently has an international airport. It is one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean area and is now among the top tourist destinations in both Italy and Europe. The city is also going through careful restoration, preparing to become one of the major cities of the Euro-Mediterranean area.
Palermo experiences a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Winters are mild, while Summers are hot and dry. Palermo is one of the warmest cities in Europe (mainly due to its warm nights), with an average annual ambient air temperature of 18.5 °C (65.3 °F). Snow is rare but not impossible. In the late 40's and in the early 2000s it snowed. More often it snows in the mountains around the city.

Mondello is a small borough of the city of Palermo in the autonomous region of Sicily in Southern Italy. Its beach lies between two mountains: Mt Gallo and Mt Pellegrino. The town was originally a small fishing village situated on marshland, but at the end of the 19th century it was drained and grew into a favourite tourist destination.
From 1912 onwards Mondello became the seat of the aristocracy. The nobility of the city fostered the construction of several exclusive and aristocratic nautical clubs, the construction of villas, lush gardens. King Ferdinand of Bourbon called it "a corner of paradise". Eventually, the tourist resort of Mondello became popular. Mondello is characterized by a white sandy beach (1.5 km long) and sea water of tropical colors. The landscape is influenced by the Natural Reserve of Capo Gallo and the reserve of Monte Pellegrino. Today the area is famous for its beach, which is one of the most coveted shores of Italy, for its many Art Nouveau villas and for sites of historical interest. Mondello has many accommodations, numerous yacht clubs and other exclusive clubs, restaurants, shops, a marina and an old bathing establishment (the Antico Stabilimento Balneare on piles), one of the landmarks of the city. It is home of the annual World Festival on the Beach for windsurfing.
