The Algarve region

Altura is in the eastern Algarve. It is a small town with many bars and restaurants and several supermarkets as well as a daily morning market selling fresh produce. At the south of the town there is a large carpark with direct access to the long all sandy beach. During the summer months water activities are available on the beach.

The Villa is situated in the countryside close to the town of Altura with its many bars and restaurants. Nearby is the historic town of Castro Marim, which is surrounded on three sides by a natural reserve, located on the eastern side of the Algarve, not far from the Guadiana river. It also has two castles that are open to the public. It is located near the center of a stretch of 10 km of wide sandy beach that extends from the mouth of the Guadiana River to the historic village of Cacela Velha. The beaches of Altura, Manta Rota and Praia Verda are a few minutes drive away. It is short drive to several picturesque nearby towns: vibrant Vila Real de Santo Antonio (8 km), Vila Nova de Cacela with its popular monthly market ,shops and train station (5km), quaint historic Cacela Velha (3 km), exciting Ayamonte, Spain (10 km) and historic Tavira (16 km). Cosmopolitan Seville in Spain is only a 80 min. drive away. Enjoy the gastronomic experience of both Portuguese and Spanish cuisine within a 15 min. drive radius: Monte Gordo has lots of bars and restaurants, in town and on the beach, that offer excellent seafood and, of course, the many great wines Portugal has to offer. There are plenty of other superb dining opportunities that exist in nearby coastal resorts in Portugal and in the Spanish region of Andalusia. The nearby A22 motorway will take you quickly anywhere along the coast, from Faro and Tavira to the modern bridge across the Guadiana to Ayamonte, Spain. Close by is the magnificent Ria Formosa National Park, a wonderful protected area great for walking and a must for bird watchers where many species can be observed as they stop over on their migration from Northern Europe to Africa.
