The Abruzzo region

Abruzzo is located in central Italy, with the Apennines in the west and the Adriatic Sea in the east. The regional capital of Abruzzo is L'Aquila. There are four provinces in Abruzzo: Pescara, Chieti, Teramo, and L'Aquila. Two-thirds of the Abruzzo's land is mountainous with the rest being hills and coast. One third of the region is designated as national or regional parkland, including the Abruzzo National Park, the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga, the National Park Maiella and Sirente Velino.

The Adriatic coast is characterized by long and sandy beaches to the north and pebbly beaches to the south.

With a population of only 1.3 million Abruzzo is one of the least populated regions in Italy. The economy is still largely based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Olive oil and wine are the main produce.

To travel to Abruzzo and other southern regions is to witness an age-old Italian lifestyle. Many old villages were abandoned and remain largely intact and the country side is rich with historic sites. It is often said that Abruzzo has as many castles as it does sheep.

Abruzzo offers a number of activities apart from the leisure of beach life and the fresh sea food at the restaurants along the coast. Because of the proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea the mountains endure heavy rain and snowfall and low temperatures all year round and there is excellent skiing in the region. Moreover, Abruzzo is alive with festival and pageant activities all year round and those who wish to avoid well developed holiday resort areas will find solace in any number of small attractive towns scattered throughout the region.

Lanciano is an ancient town in Abruzzo with 36000 inhabitants. It is located 15 min from the sea, an hour from the Apennine mountains and 46 km south of Pescara. The well preserved historical centre of Lanciano consists of four parts of which our apartment is in the very oldest. The storical center contain several interesting buildings and historical features among the ancient streets. Being very italian this vivacious town has a number of good restaurants and bars as well as shops. Wednesdays and Saturdays are market days.

The coast near Lanciano is still unspoilt with beautiful free beaches with clear water and wonderful fish restaurants. Even during peak summer time the beaches are not crowded, allowing you staying at the water front. It is also possible to bring dogs to many of the beaches. Some offers natural shade from the cliffs.

The Apennine mountains are an hour away with several national parks and offers good skiing in the winter and trekking or riding in the the summer. Several great wines are produced in the region and there are many wineries to visit, some in the vicinity of Lanciano.

There are also many small towns and villages surrounding Lanciano well worth a visit. The inland region so different from the coast. South along the coast is Vasto, a nice lively coast town and out in the Mediterranean sea are the beautiful Tremiti islands. These islands are a fantastic destination in summer. You can do it in a day, but to really enjoy it - spend the night.
