Although just a small village, we can recommend two restaurants including a wonderful new Pizzeria in the park, superb al fresco eating with delightful views of the valley below and Fermo. It's also a lovely place just to go for a coffee during the day or a drink in the evening.
Le Marche enjoys Mediterranean summers with short Alpine winters providing the best of both worlds. The region is predominantly agricultural providing a wide selection of good food & wine - see website - http://www.italianmade.com/regions/region11.cfm
There are many historical centres to visit - Loreto, Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Jesi. Rome & Florence are also within easy reach (2.5 hours drive) or by train from Pedaso.
The A14 Autostrada runs up the Adriatic coast providing fast and easy access to the region. Those in less of a hurry can choose the old 'Nazionale' which runs parallel through local towns and villages.
Monterubbiano is a beautiful village situated 463 metres above sea level on a hill top overlooking the Aso valley. It is just 8 Kms from the sea and boasts terrific views of the Adriatic, the Aso valley and the Sibillini Mountains.
In 268 B.C. it became a Roman town (Urbs Romana) and was later destroyed by the Goths. The existence of the town of Urbiano dates back to 9th century. In the Middle Ages, it held a very strong strategic position and in 1443 Francesco Sforza fortified its walls, leaving a rare example of military architecture.
The historical centre where our home is built dates back to 1600.
Agriculture is the main activity here, hence the wonderful fresh produce available from the local shops in the village, but both small artisan industry and tourist activities have been developed in recent times. There is a market on the 1st and 14th of every month.
Places to see in Monterubbiano:
Take some time to visit some of the beautiful buildings and churches in the village that bear witness to a thriving community of a bygone era. They are quite stunning!
The Pagani Theatre: built in 1875.
The Palazzo Comunale: Roman/Gothic XIV century.
Palazzo Onesti: Renaissance built in 1553.
The Palazzo Segreti: Built in 1443.
The Cimitero Monumentale (The Cemetery): Built in 1875 by the architect Luca Galli.
The Public Gardens known as the “Parco di San Rocco” where you can play five a side football, tennis, volley ball. There is also a stables if you wish to go horse riding.
The Archaeological Museum and the Picture Gallery.
There are 11 churches in Monterubbiano for the most part either Gothic or Romanesque, they are all quite lovely and it’s worth a visit to see some of the beautiful frescoes and paintings. Of special note is the Church of San Francesco ( now a museum) just off the main square with the most magnificent Baroque bell tower which was built in 1247. Another must is the Church of Crocefisso; just outside of the town towards Petritoli. This was built in 1590 and inside you can find paintings by Bonfini.
For tourist information the Council Buildings just off the main square are full of all kinds of information and we have prepared a compendium of useful information which you will find on your arrival at "Casa Nostra".
There is always something interesting either to see or do in Monterubbiano or the many other surrounding villages. The word “Sagra” in Italian means “Festival”, not to be confused with “Festa” which means “Feast Day”. This area of Le Marche has its fair share of both, particularly in the summer months.
Monterubbiano can also offer sports and recreational facilities: tennis, football, horse riding, walking, children's play area and cycling.
Fermo is just 15 minutes away from Monterubbiano. It is one of the oldest hill top cities in Italy and the provincial capital of the area. Like Monterubbiano it is full of pageantry and in August a palio is held (remarkably similar to that of Siena). There is a weekly market which should not be missed.
Loreto is just 45 minutes away to the north. It is the oldest Roman Catholic shrine in Europe.
Ascoli Piceno and Jesi are both approx. 1 hour away by car. They are beautiful historic towns in their own right but are perhaps better known for their wines. A must for the budding sommelier.
Rome and Florence are reachable by train, coach or car (Approx. 3 hours drive).
There are many beaches to choose from within 15 minutes drive of Monterubbiano from the parasol, chaise longue and waiter service of Porto San Giorgio and Grottamare to the quieter and more informal free beaches of Cupra Marittima.
Every single day of the week there is a market held in either Monterubbiano or one of the surrounding villages. Fresh fish is delivered to the village once or twice a week and the local shops are very well stocked with fresh produce. For more serious retail therapy and supermarkets, we recommend Porto San Giorgio, Pedaso or Fermo, just 15 minutes away by car.
It is difficult to speak ill of any of the restaurants in the area and we have listed many in our home compendium; however within easy reach of the village we would particularly recommend La Tenuta del Conte; wonderful food in a delightful location; see link http://www.latenutadelconte.eu
In the village, we can recommend two excellent restaurants including a wonderful, new pizzeria within walking distance of the house. At the pizzeria you can eat "al fresco" and not just Pizza, a main meal if you prefer. Here you can enjoy the delightful views of the valley below looking towards the sea and Fermo.
Comments from some of our guests:
In adition to the excellent Trip Advisor reviews of our home see below some of the other comments left by guests dating all the way back to 2008:
Thank you very much for the hire of your lovely house, so authentically Italian and in the heart of the town. We have had a wonderful two weeks holiday, so relaxing. We made great use of your balcony, enjoying a drink most evenings. Emlyn & Anne Walters, Winster, Derbyshire. July 2008
Your house is absolutely lovely, thank you. Dermott and Sarah Sales, Bray, UK; May 2009
It was a great trip and a wonderful experience as a first time renter. Your home is lovely and the town very special. Chuck and Denise Napolitano, Boston, Massachusetts, USA; June 2009
It was a pleasure to see your house and pretty village and we thought the baker's shop on the doorstep was a real treat. Such good bread too! Dr Ken and Alice Wright, Suffolk, UK; June 2009
Your house is absolutely lovely. It has been so thoughtfully restored and there is something special everywhere you look. Thanks for a lovely stay. Mr and Mrs McKay; Dubai; October 2010
We had a wonderful holiday; ‘Casa Nostra’ is a lovely house, very comfortable and exceptionally well equipped. You really have provided everything anyone could possibly want. The information pack you provided was extremely helpful and we referred to it often when deciding on places to go or which restaurant to try. Your recommendations were excellent! We thought Monterubbiano was a charming village with enough shops for our everyday needs. The village is very well placed for exploring the region, and there is so much to see and do. When we had a day of stormy weather, it was nice to have such a comfortable house to stay in, the sitting room is so bright and comfortable (loved the blue and white colour scheme). Thanks again for everything - your friendly emails, all the information you provided, the brilliant directions from the airport etc. etc. etc.!!! Mr & Mrs Manno, Leicestershire UK Aug/Sept 2012.
