The Algarve region

The Algarve is famous for glorious year round sunshine and excellent sandy beaches. These vary from secluded coves with amazing cliffs such as San Rafael and Caveiro to vast stretches of golden sand such as Armacao de Pera, all sea washed by the fresh and clear Atlantic Ocean.

There are around 40 golf courses in the Algarve most of which are within a 30 min drive from Casa Leylando. The fabulous Amendoeira Golf Resort can be seen from the villa and includes 2 stunning championship courses designed by Sir Nick Faldo and Christy O'Connor Jnr. plus a par 3 academy course and a magnificent club house that is well worth a visit for the views and facilities whether you are a golfer or not.

Silves Golf (10 mins drive) offers spectacular mountain views but it is anything other than 'a walk in the park' - low handicappers will find it a serious challenge yet high handicaps (with concentration) will also be able to enjoy their round. Surrounding cork and citrus farms generate a true feeling of authentic Portuguese golf
The Pinta and Gramacho courses, located at Lagoa (10 to 15 min) are set among rolling hills and olive groves and offer some great twilight deals

Cycling is becoming increasingly popular in Portugal like many other countries. Bicycles can be hired from a number of outlets. Algarve Bike Hire is is only 10 mins drive away at Armacao de Pera and they have hybrid, road and mountain bikes for adults or children at very competitive rates.

The Algarve is a popular destination for Walking and Birdwatching. 15 minutes drive away, en route to Portimao, is the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, with its channels, salt marshes, salt flats, lagoons and estuaries. It is home to Flamingos, various waders and waterfowl and many other birds.

Dolphin watching and sea fishing. Trips can be arranged from various places along the Algarve coast including Alberfeira. Portimao and Lagos.

Try Go-karting at Almancil Karting, 8km from Vilamoura. There is an adult track which is a 760m replica of a former Brazilian Formula 1 track, a junior track and one for the even younger (Mini Formula 1) .

A jeep safari is a great way to get a guided tour of the Algarve countryside and places off the beaten track.

Horse riding can be arranged in Silves.

The well known resorts of Albufeira (15 min)and Lagos (30 min) are a short drive away should you wish to visit. Both have and abundance of bar restaurants and nightclubs.

The 2 headlands Sagres & Cape St Vicente at the westernmost tip of the Algarve are definitely worth a visit whether you are a surfer or just want to see the historic fort and lighthouses and rugged cliff top views.

There are some stunning views from the 950m high Monchique mountains

Central Algarve

Apart from the famous beaches and golf courses, there is a wide variety of interesting but lesser well known places to visit just a short drive from the villa. The historic Silves, only 6km away, traces back to 1,000 BC and was an important place in Roman times and during the Moorish occupation in the early 11th Century. The remains of the Moorish castle are still impressive and an archaeological museum shows local objects from the Stone Age onwards. The Cathedral was built in the 13th Century on the site of a Mosque. There are several excellent restaurants in Silves serving fresh fish, chicken piri piri and many more home cooked meals at very reasonable prices but if you want a real treat try O Alambique in Poco Barreto 2km away, where everything is home made by the german chef/owner .
Guia (10km) is on the outskirts of Albufeira and is the home to Zoomarine, the Algarve shopping mall and the house and vineyard of Sir Cliff.

Zoomarine (10km) is a mixture of marine centre, zoo and amusement park located on the EN125 between Alcantarilha and Guia. You could spend a whole day there watching spectacular aquatic displays of dolphins and sea lions and visiting the aquarium and exhibition centre, the fun fair, swimming pools, bars and restaurants. For an additional cost, you can go swimming with the dolphins.

There are 2 Waterparks nearby. Aqualand, formerly known as The Big One, located near Alcantarilha on the main EN 125 road. It is a family water park with some exciting rides and a safer area for younger kids. Slide and Splash is newer than Aqualand, but has the same kind of attractions and is well sign-posted on the EN125 just past Lagoa.

Algoz (6km in the direction of Faro). There you can find Krazy World which is theme park providing a day of children entertainment. Not as extensive as Zoomarine, but cheaper and still good fun. There is a fairground, mini-golf and a petting farm with pony rides

At Alcantarilha (5km away) the capela dos ossos (chapel of bones) is worth a visit

Lagoa (7km)is an interesting old Portuguese town. Enjoy a stroll around the. narrow streets followed by a rest on a tree shaded bench or a corner cafe.

For your shopping you can drive or walk the 1km to Poco Barreto, buy a fresh loaf of fresh bread, enjoy two coffees or glasses of wine and get change from a 5 Euro note! There are several shops and supermarkets 5 -10 mins drive away at Algoz, Alcantrillha and Silves. If you prefer the mall experience, Algarve Shopping on the EN125 at Guia with shops, restaurants, bowling alley and cinema that shows English films is the nearest. There is also the Algarve Forum at Faro, Bougainvilea Plaza at Quinta do Largo and Centro Commercial and Agua at Portimao.
