In the Old Town Centre, a pedestrian mall, you can choose from its shady alleys, its centuries-old stones, the shops, the most intriguing clubs, or by foot in a few minutes the white beaches of the Lido, the sea, relaxation and entertainment.
Alghero is a city of 42,000 inhabitants that overlooks the homonymous bay area in North-West Sardinia. It is the ideal place for your holiday because it combines the comfort and amenities of a city with a very relaxed pace of life. The people are friendly and nice, with unique traditions, and the places full of history.
Founded at the dawn of the twelfth century by the Doria family of Genoa as a fortified port, it remained almost constantly under the dominion of the Republic of Genoa until the middle of the '300. It was then conquered by the Aragonese and continued to grow and expand economically through the establishment of the first settlers of Catalan origin.
Following the Catalan domination, the Habsburgs of Spain, under King Charles V, ruled until the early eighteenth century. Alghero and the whole island of Sardinia were then transferred to the Kingdom of Piedmont. More recently, the city was the scene of a disastrous bombing by the Allies during WWII, from which it still retains marks, and finally after the war it became known as an international tourist destination.
