The "Regione" of Liguria is a narrow, downward-pointing crescent, stretching from La Spezia in the east to France in the west. It is a long strip of coastline, backed by an equally long range of mountains, the Ligurian Apennines, and near France the Alps. The hills and mountains have been slowly depopulating and the vast majority of modern Ligurians live by the sea: 70% in fact, most of them in urban centres like Genoa (the administrative capital of the region), La Spezia and Savona. The warm climate, even in winter, means that the area enjoys a combination of Mediterranean and sub-tropical vegetation. Palm trees, cacti, oleander, wisteria, boungainvillea, heady-scented pitosporum and citrus grow near the shore. Higher up olives (and some vines) are grown on the terraces which rise above the sea; at this level uncultivated ground is covered by a thick, pine-dotted mediterranean maquis or dense woods of evergreen. The regional park of Portofino (which extends to RAPALLO and Camogli) with an exceptional variety of microclimates, hosts one of the largest flower concentrations in the mediterranean area, with more than 700 spontaneous species.
Rapallo is one of the famous names of the Italian Riviera, a resort which nowadays mixes a slightly fading glamour with the more vibrant and accessible modern incarnation of the Italian seaside holiday. Rapallo has a sandy beach around the bay towards the marina. there are concrete jetties and platforms on the south side of the bay, and plenty of huge breakwater rocks along the seafront in betwwen. Portion of the beach will charge an access fee during the summer months. The ancient part of the town is a pedestrian area full of shops and restaurants. Some places of interest are the Sanctuary of Montallegro reachable by cable car, the Basilica of Santi Gervasio e Protasio, the Castle set picturesquely in the bay, Santo Stefano oratory, the Oratory of the Whites, Porta delle Saline, Hannibal's bridge, Museo del Merletto, Museo Gaffoglio. The Rapallo Golf Club: if you fancy a round during your holiday, Rapallo's fine course is a short taxi ride inland. They ask that you are a member of a club at home and possess a handicap. Clubs, carts and buggies can be hired for the day. There should be no need to book during the week , but at the weekend ring ahead and only expect to be able to play in the afternoon.Near Rapallo there is the town of Santa Margherita Ligure that shares Rapallo's reputation as a seaside resort ut retains a saltier, more sea-faring flavour thanks to its continuing fishing activities. It also offers a wide variety of shops of all kinds. Then at about 8 km from Rapallo you can find Portofino in a tiny, narrow harbour a handful of open fishing boats are moored amongst the luxury leisure vessels. It is this surviving hint of authenticity that makes Portofino so special, together with its perfect setting. The village, the tall headland and deep bay, a glorious coming together of all the elements that give the Italian Riviera its unique visual impact, luminous pastels set against the deep green hills and framed by the intense blues of sky and sea.
